One illness after another

Has anyone else been experiencing this this winter?
I have a 3.5 year old and a 13 month old. 3.5 year old goes to nursery 3 days a week, baby goes to 1 baby group but sees other babies at different times.
I feel like it's just been one thing after another since September. Is this normal? DH was ill maybe once a year, my immune system not as good as his but still, I'd only be unwell around 3 times. Since September, I can't even tell you how many times I've been unwell, DH has had some nasty viruses and my boys have had one cold after the other. Tummy bugs have swept through us twice. My eldest is on his second ear infection in a few weeks and needs an ent visit, he's just thrown up on the sofa from the pain and is now fast asleep. My 13 month old has just recovered from a nasty two week cold, he was well for around 7 days and yesterday, thick green snot has started again.
We eat fruits / vegetables. Take vitamins. I'm not sure what else we can naturally do.

DH and I are exhausted. Is this honestly normal?

Sadly it's very normal. Little ones have to build their immunity and do this by catching every bloody bug going (then sharing them with us). I think we spent a total of six years permanently sick through nursery and infants. You have my sympathies. It does get better as they get older. Mine are 10 and 12 and rarely get sick, although this winter it seems to have been one thing after another.

Pita but very normal

I just came on to see if anyone else was having this problem. DC goes to preschool 2 x a week and has been for 2 years but the illness this year seems never ending, coughing & cold symptoms every week, sickness bug a few weeks ago & an upset tummy this week 🤦🏽‍♀️ the last time we went to the Dr he said viral and nothing they can do

DH and I were just saying this about our DD. She has a temperature the past two days and feels like we only just got her off antibiotics for sinusitis

VivaVivaa · 05/03/2024 19:22

This has been my first winter with 2 DC and it has felt particularly awful this year. Previously, DS1 (who’s been in childcare for nearly 3 years) has been quite robust and has barely had any time off from nursery. This year, since October he’s had more time off than the previous 3 years combined. Of course baby has also caught everything going and ended up in A&E twice with huge temperatures and lethargy. It’s been hideous. So while I do think it’s ’normal’, I for one have found this winter particularly bad compared to others.

5 weeks and still it's going around our 3 never ending

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sorry a lot of you are out there suffering too with never ending illnesses.

I know small kids get sick, I know it's good for their immune system. But I didn't know it would be this hard going and nonstop. I used to be a winter person. Now I can't wait for spring...

How are everyone little ones now? My DD had a temp last weekend and a nap and has been up and down all week and again today, temp is back and had a nap :(

RedMark · 10/03/2024 18:13

@Raindancer411 sorry your dd is struggling again. How old is she?

My eldest DS has finished antibiotics and is much happier but I'm not convinced his ear infection is completely gone. He has an ent appt next week so hopefully that'll help sort him.
My younger one just had a runny nose, got worse Wednesday (lots of crying/screaming, not sleeping). And since Thursday evening has had an elevated temperature (going up to 37.8) so not really bad, but he's been absolutely miserable and I'm at the end of my rope with the lack of sleep. DH took the boys yesterday and I slept in, then in the night DS2 wouldn't go back to sleep no matter what I did (he usually just breastfeeds back to sleep), so DH was rocking him in the kitchen at 430. I went for a nap this afternoon and I still feel exhausted. Since middle of January it's just been constant.

My brother used to call my niece's nursery 'the germ factory.

VivaVivaa · 10/03/2024 20:16

Baby is poorly again here, although eldest is fine. Bronchiolitis this time. Breathing okay but reduced feeds on the cusp of needing admission. Thankfully we are at home with community nurse reviews.

RedMark · 10/03/2024 20:37

@VivaVivaa sorry to hear. How old is your little one?

We did our best to maximise 13 month olds naps today as sleep really is the only thing that helps. He went off not long ago for the night with a temp of 38 😔 dreading tonight. The last few nights have been awful. Doc checked him Friday and said he has no infection but a red throat so just a case of waiting it out. I'm hoping he'll turn a corner soon as he's been ill a week now, and temperatures since Thursday evening.
