Low neutrophils in baby

Hi. Just looking for people’s experiences. My seven-week-old had a blood test a few weeks ago because of jaundice and it was discovered that he’s got low neutrophils. He’s been having regular blood tests since - they were going up initially (0.8 to 0.9) but his last test was 0.6. They should be above 1.

I’m worried sick as low neutrophils could be a sign of leukaemia (I really shouldn’t have googled). Does anyone have any experience of low neutrophils in a baby?

Thank you x

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Has he had antibiotics or similar? DS's neutrophils took a real hit when he had intravenous antibiotics at 6 weeks. It was terrifying but they went back up naturally over a period of 1-2 weeks and he's now a healthy 5 year old.

@nc22124 No, no antibiotics x

We're moving this thread to our Children's Health topic for the OP, and giving it a bump to get it back into active conversations.

And another hopeful bump.

Hi @MrsCeecee - just wanted to see how you got on with this? I’m having a similar experience with my 5 week old. Hope all is ok!

Everything is fine 😊 His blood was tested regularly and on the last test a few weeks ago they’d gone back up to normal! No idea what the cause was. Hope all is well for you xx

How long did it take for your LO's numbers to rise to normal levels? My LO was found to be neutropenic at 3 weeks and levels started to gradually rise at 4 months. Her past two levels have been normal, but one was a response to vaccines and we think she had a cold most recently x

MrsCeecee · 21/10/2024 09:58

@Beth98 I think it was about three months of getting regularly tested before they went back up xx

Okay thank you. Was that back to normal within 3 months or started rising gradually? X

They rose very gradually over the three month period (though went down again at one point) until they were back to normal (though only just) at the end of it x
