Ds fontanelle not closed

Hi my ds is 22 months and his fontanelle is still open. About 20p piece sized. Ive gotten myself overly worried by googling. Should I talk to my health visitor or wait until his 2 year check. If it's relevant he hasn't said any real words yet he babbles but no real meaning he's also very shy and runs away if other children try to play with him. Any advice or if your little one took a long time to close aswell thankyou in advance.

I'd say it's always best to ask someone if you're worried about something.

I’ve got the same situation with my LO, she is 2 years old.. everyone is different so I’d recommend seeing your GP. My GP measured her head and put in a referral to paeds, they then run blood tests to check her thyroid and liver (tests come back fine) so they’ve told me to wait until 26 months to see if it closes before I can be seen by the Paeds.. I doubt it’s going to close by then it’s about the size of a coin too. They don’t seem to be worried as she has hit every other milestone! I hope this helps; I was searching for answers everywhere too and couldn’t find much online of people talking about it!

Thankyou health visitor has suggested getting him a gp appointment but I'm struggling to get in fast enough on the phone I'm trying again in the morning. He's on the 99th centile for his head so may be to do with his head size. x

Personally think GPs and HV are useless when it comes to cranial issues .

Does he have plagiocephaly or brachycephaly ?

Notsomini · 04/03/2024 20:18

Didn't know what they were so I've just googled it. His head shape does look a bit like plagiocephaly he's in bed now and has allot of hair so it's hard to tell x

My 2nd and 4th children still had open fontanelles aged 2. I can't remember when they closed but they did eventually.
