6 Week Old - is it silent reflux?

Hiya,

So my DD is 6 weeks old, and seems to be gaining weight really well, she's exclusively breastfed. Feeding is going well, however, she seems to occasionally appear to wretch and gag after feeds. She's producing a lot of foamy spit at times and in the evenings when she's been cluster feeding a lot, we're getting a big sick. She's not distressed after being sick, but the gagging seems to upset her and she goes red in the face and holds her breath until she starts cryings a few seconds later.

Could it be silent reflux? I don't know what to make of it and she hasn't had her 6 Week check yet.

To add, I had excess amniotic fluid and they said she might have problems with swallowing. I'm not sure whether they did any of the checks they said they would in Hospital seeing as they somehow managed to discharge us without anyone doing her newborn health check, but I just worry that I'm over thinking and that she might have something wrong with her swallow.

I don't want to properly panic, but it is starting to worry me because it's happening more often rather than less as she gets bigger.

Thank you.

My DS had silent reflux it started at 3 weeks. Before then he was happy and content. After a feed he would never vomit at all. But i could hear gargling / gurgling and then the crying started.

I googled and looked up everything all the tips. And basically things xan help but nothing really helped until he was on solids for us. We started at 4.5months and noticed a massive difference.

We also saw an Osteopath , cranial in infants and we dis that at 9 weeks and saw a small improvement. Less fussy and seemed a bit more settled.

But the major change was solids, sittinf up.

We did the tilet on the bed. Tilt when nursing to more upright, hold him upright. For 30mins after a feed day and night, burping and even not burping. I cut out dairy 100%. Drs were useless and just prescribed Gaviscon which DS hated and made him cry even more it was torture. Nothing worked until we got on solids. We nursed until 20months and DS had no issues after he was having 3 2 meals a day..

I did speak to 3 other ladies who said they found auccess in pre/probiotocs for babies such as Biogia. I wantes to tey that but DH was scares of it (bacteria) deapite the glowing reviews. Next time I will just go straight to that.

Bioagia caused my DS to have a huge reaction, I don't recommend it at all!

Sounds a bit like reflux but could also be that she's going through the 6 week growth spurt and taking on way too much milk each feed and the excess is coming up.

I'd watch and wait but try to sit upright after feeds. If it continues long term then also consider cmpa.

Is she crying and seemingly uncomfortable for a period of time after feeding?

It could just be that you've got a good supply and she's getting slightly too much too quickly.

Is she quite frowny? Dd had it and had a really wrinkled serious look all the time

My ds had symptoms since birth and we finally got a diagnosis at 3 weeks had all the same symptoms as your describing we ended up getting infant gaviscon on prescription we couldn't even lay him on his back because it made it so much worse! Gargling and gagging hiccuping all the time and vomiting in the middle of the night was horrible! However the infant gaviscon has worked a treat it's been a god send! It thickens the milk making it less easy to bring up. It's all trial and error some things work for some baby's and some things don't but this may be worth a try bring it up to you gp and see what they recommend. Hope your little one feels better soon and it all works out op try not to stress over it too much you will will find something that works for baby x
