Baby's head has jumped centiles **MNHQ tweaked title**

Had 10 month HV review review today. All was going well until she plotted the head measurement and DS has jumped from ~60th centile (8 weeks) to 98th centile now.

Advised to see GP so will call and get appointment tomorrow.

Feeling a bit panicky. Has anyone had this and it was nothing?

Hopefully it's just a naturally big head (I have a big head too). Hard to know if it's gradually grown or suddenly grown. He's otherwise well.

The only thing I would say and this is only because I was a community nursery nurse in HV team.

Did the HV check that the other HC were plotted correctly ?
Mistakes with plotting occasionally can happen.

Agree check it's been recorded correctly

One of mine's weight plummeted after being weighed by HV

Cue lots of panic

Closer examination of the centile chart a few days later showed that the mark was in the wrong place and there was no weight loss at all

What happened for you with this in the end? (The exact same thing has just happened to us and I'm feeling worried too)..

Theunamedcat · 04/12/2024 21:35

Mis recording happens

Hi there.

So we saw the GP who wasn't too bothered, but said they would put in a routine referral to paediatrics.

Paediatrics called within 2 days saying the consultant had 'upgraded' it to urgent, so we saw them very soon after.

The paediatrician wanted an MRI head and spine, but there were a few other slightly odd things in DS's medical history which also weighed into that decision. If it were just the head measurement I don't know if he would. He also wanted routine bloods checking. There was discussion about genetic testing.

MRI and bloods were all fine, and we're seeing the paediatrician again soon and if he is happy with head measurement and development then we will be discharged.

The working hypothesis is that it's a genetic big head in line with mine and DH's. However the paediatrician did take it quite seriously and want to prove that it's nothing else. We'll never know if the centiles ever did rapidly increase, or if the first measurement was in accurate and he's always had a big head 🤷
