Funny smelling breath when unwell

Does anyone ever notice whenever their child is unwell that they have a strange smell on their breath? My 5yos breath sometimes smells very sweet when he is poorly. Not every time, but it's a very distinct smell. If you bottled it and asked me to smell it I would probably identify it as 'little Blomdd's fever breath'. Curious to know why this might be.

Yes I have noticed this. I think it's a thing!

Tiptapcrab · 28/01/2024 20:52

Pear drops

A quick Google suggested pear drops (though only linked to diabetes) but sadly have never had one so can't compare.

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I would assume it's a sore throat?

Thunderstruckbysnoring · 28/01/2024 20:55

Yes. Not bad breath per se but an "off" smell. My sister had a real ill smell when we were little. I hated it. I have covid memories of when she was in hospital though so maybe it's that I can still "smell" if I think hard enough

MadamVastra · 28/01/2024 20:55

Haha! Well not everyone can smell it on their kids anyway - but at least now you have a bit of an insight to what pear drops smell like 😂

AQuantityOfNaughtyCats · 28/01/2024 20:55

Ketones. Not a good thing.

lolomoon · 28/01/2024 20:59

Pear drop smell is definitely linked to diabetes. But yes, my son's breath is always noticeably smelly (as is my own) when sick. Infection smells generally though. So if there's any kind of chest infection, sinus etc it can be stinky.

whereareyousleep · 28/01/2024 21:00

Yep I always smell it when mine have been poorly the most unusual smell. Very rarely smell it on the older one now. But my 5 year old had it last week and now has scarlet fever...again!

mynameiscalypso · 28/01/2024 21:02

I can smell when DS has a temperature. It's not his breath per se, maybe more his sweat and a change in the way that smells? I barely take his temperature these days because I just know!

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 28/01/2024 21:03

Our son is 14 years old and non-verbal (ASD, SLD, deaf). He definitely has a 'change of breath' when he's coming down with a virus, it's one of the clues that help us to support him appropriately.

Agreed. Hoping it's not some some sort of weird fetish troll

Omg no! I have lots of other very normal posts 😅 even searched for it but only found posts linked to diabetes!
