A cough that just won't go away.

My DS3 keeps getting a cough that is so bad, it makes him vomit.
He's coughing so much, that it makes him gag, and then he throws up. It's a phlegmy cough, one where sometimes he can't catch his breath in between coughs. You can't hear it on his chest though, his chest sounds clear.

I took him to the doctors just before Christmas, and she prescribed antibiotics but she was more concerned that his tonsils were slightly inflamed.

Anyway, he couldn't take the antibiotics. Any which way I gave them to him, he promptly heaved them back out. He's got a penicillin allergy so he had to have a mjnty tasting one. I prefer this to the banana one if I'm to be honest but there was just no way he will swallow it.

He's had this cough 3 times now. My husband seems to think it's the onset of asthma. My husband has asthma.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Advice, what anyone can suggest, what I am to say to the doctor. A miracle cure! Just say here at 1am, listening to my poor boy coughing isn't nice. He's just had a drink, some calpol and some cough medicine and all seems to have settled now.

I'm just concerned the longer he has his cough, it might be damaging his lungs. Anyone had anything similar? Thank you.

My DH has this atm. Has had it for weeks. Just bumped into two sets of people walking the dog that have or have had it. It's really nasty. One had been given cough syrup with codeine by the GP to 'suppress' the cough. She was feeling mildly better but not cured. My DH has been taking anti-histamines as the doctor told him it could be caused by allergic rhinitis/post-nasal drip. I would take your DS back to the docs if I were you, just to see if there is anything else he can take for it, bar Lemsip etc.
