Weight loss - virus or do I need to do something?

My DD had dropped just under a kg the last 2 weeks - she has a cough / cold / achey legs virus so guessing that’s causing it but when would you get the weight loss looked into? I’m worried I’m missing something more serious but have health anxiety and don’t want to over think this!

Assuming your DD is being weighed by a HV or similar in which case they would be able to pick out if weightloss was a problem as would mark it in their health book. It's not unusual for weight to change when ill as we tend to eat less. If you're worried about her then speak with gp/hv for reassurance

How old is you daughter OP? Are you weighing her or is she?

Sunbeamsandshadows · 28/12/2023 19:05

she’s 7 so not weighed often. the only reason I know she’s lost weight is she jumped on my scales for fun a couple of weeks ago while I was getting ready and I happened to see the number - 22.4 and today she’s 21.6.
she’s petite anyway so I guess I tend to feel more anxious when she loses weight than her older sister who is much bigger for her age.

ETA:
she’s had a temp/
cough
on and off for 10 days now, not massively unwell and I just assumed a standard cold virus but she’s now off her food completely so I’m just questioning myself
over whether it’s more than just a cold ☹️

It's unusual to lose so much weight, especially over Christmas but a virus is possible. Have you tried tempting her with custard, ice cream, rice pudding, etc? Anything she fancies to kick-start eating again and keep an eye on her.

Sunbeamsandshadows · 28/12/2023 19:47

she’s refused all food today, like anything at all which is new. I think nearly a kg in a 1-2weeks feels a lot but she does have cough/cold/temp/aches so virus land which I’m hoping accounts for it?

It's okay to contact your doctor, even for a bit of reassurance.

Contact dr, but if she's not eaten for a week that's enough to lose a kg I think

Sunbeamsandshadows · 28/12/2023 20:01

yes good I idea, I’ll call them tomorrow. I don’t think they’ll offer an urgent appt as she’s still drinking/urinating so will be after the new year I imagine. She can’t stop coughing and has a fever of 39.6 and looks horribly pale☹️
She’s been eating just not as much as usual for the last week but nothing at all today.

She might have covid. Around 1 in 20 people in England were estimated to have it last week.
Maybe nutritious smoothies would help, or make them into ice lollies. Jelly, yoghurts - all the things that are easy and soothing.
