Bruise fading and coming back

My DS had a door opened into his foot on Saturday night and really hurt two of his toes. When I looked one was swollen and the other one looked fine. We iced it and gave painkillers and he's been limping but can bear weight.

On Tuesday he showed me his foot and a bruise had appeared on the other injured toe that extended up onto his foot. I decided I would contact the GP the next day as wondering if he had actually broken his foot! In the morning the bruise had faded to almost nothing so decided not to do anything about it. Then this morning the bruise was back again and a sort of brownie/green colour. I messaged the GP while we were out and they asked for a pic. When we got home I went to take a pic and the bruise was barely visible. So I embarrassedly sent a photo of a pretty normal looking foot and they said the bruise fading would indicate that it's improving and if he can bear weight it's unlikely to be broken. Phew!

Now DS has just told me the bruise is back and it is! Darker brown sort of colour. I have never known a bruise to do this before. Has anyone else ever experienced this and can explain what's happening (and whether I need to worry). Also why when he has banged his toes is the bruising also on his foot? Thanks for reading this epic monologue.

I think you need to take him first an X-ray now. Just to check it out.

There's so many tiny bones in your feet, personally I'd get him xrayed now
