3 year old coughing so much

My 3 year old DS has had a nasty cough for just over a week. We hoped it had cleared up but it seems to have got a bit worse over the last day or so. On Saturday he coughed so much overnight he was sick a couple of times. He coughs during the day when he exerts himself even in the slightest way, like today when he was dancing. He seems happy apart from being a bit tired, no temp and breathing ok. He did have a cold but that's gone. It's much worse at night. He had croup last year so I know it's not that. We have a doctors appointment on weds so they can check him over. I keep worrying it's asthma as he is prone to coughs. How long do these coughs usually take to pass?

Good to see your doctor. It can be a symptom of asthma. Or might be chest infection.

It's probably just the after-effects of the cold, I remember my toddlers being like this and normally passes by week 3.

Just try and get him to slow down a little and not drink too much at once, though fluids are obviously important.

But if you feel like you need reassurance then get him checked out, it's always better to air on the side of caution

Thanks both. I wasn't going to make a GP appointment but then the childminder even mentioned he was still coughing so much. My mum did say I had a permanent cough for the first 5 years of my life and I'm ok now so hopefully he'll recover soon. We've been encouraging him to drink lots of water.
