its been a week since my little one has diarrhoea and it’s just got worse, went out of hours gp because he had spots on tongue and fever and also the diarrhoea on Tuesday doctor said viral infection wait it out, two days later went urgent care tongue full of white spots fever up to 40 and loose motion only water coming out doctor said he has tonsillitis inflamed tonsils and spots covering it and also told he has gastrointestinal because of the diarrhoea. Started antibiotics he isn’t eating anything diarrhoea is really bad not eating anything still watery motion fever is still there sleeps all day, lifeless. I am not sure if I should take him back to ae but it only has been 1 day since starting the antibiotics. Really worried about him.

I would probably call 111 for advice. Is he drinking fluids?

Returnsreturnsandmorereturns · 25/11/2023 09:21

I would call 111.

Is he worse than yesterday? Is he weeing? If he is showing any signs of spesis I would take him to A and E.

Dinasourdi · 25/11/2023 10:04

Yes I am making him drink water, I just put some squash in it and also been giving him dirolyte, it feels like his health is not improving but getting worse I don’t know if I should focus on stopping the diarrhoea by giving rice, bananas etc or should I be worrying about him not eating anything and just sleeping most of the time. Since yesterday he has completely stopped taking any food as before that I would give him some rice but he is still having yogurt the only thing he likes and it’s even more of a problem when it comes to food as he is allergic to wheat, egg, nuts, soya. Yes he is still weeeing because he is breastfed and I am giving him water. Should I be giving him milk is it okay with diarrhoea like I want to give him some yazoo or some flavoured milk just another sought of liquid.

If a child is deteriorating which it sounds like he is you need to take him back (out of hours or gp). Keep breastfeeding- it’s full of antibodies and a great source of comfort and fluids.

Dinasourdi · 25/11/2023 10:27

I also think he he deteriorating because he’s currently only drinking water and breastfeeding he is still having loose motion, even when the fever comes down which it only comes down with Nurofen and not calpol he still stays in my lap, the day I took him to ae his sugar levels were really low so he had some chocolate to raise it back up and he does have like dry lips as well but I am also quite worried about the spots like his full mouth is covered in it. Should I call 111 or just take him to ae.

I’d personally just take him to a&e. They’ll want to know if he’s deteriorating and he may just need some IV fluids to help him until the antibiotics kick in. Good luck xx

Tangofantastic · 25/11/2023 10:30

Dry lips = dehydrated so that alone with his age
warrants him being seen again

Cornettoninja · 25/11/2023 10:32

I would take him back to A&E. He sounds very poorly and like he needs a bit of attention. I would be querying sepsis and dehydration.

Turns out he dosent have tonsillitis and didn’t need the antibiotics but little one has oral herpes simplex virus and the antiviral is suppose to be given in the first 96 hours of having the spots/sores in mouth but doctor still gave the antivirals. Temperature is high as 41 dosent come down with calpol but does with Nurofen. He is still taking liquid and also breastfeeds but is not eating anything at all. Can the antivirals cause him to have really bad diarrhoea as once we stopped the antibiotics the diarrhoea stopped but sicne starting the antivirals yesterday the motions are back. Just so worried about him. Nearly been two weeks sicne he’s like this. Started from a vira infection to tonsillitis which he didn’t have and now this herpes.

Poor little mite. You can look up the medication, but side effects do often include diarrhoea. He is probably just so run down that diarrhoea is to be expected. He is also not eating, so nothing there to form harder poo.

Have you considered where he caught it from? I think it needs to be passed on directly, so perhaps a kiss from a relative with a cold sore? Herpes is a nasty virus, so you want to do your best to prevent passing it on to others too.

I assume you are still offering the BRAT type of foods? Apple puree or mashed banana might be easiest for him to contemplate with such a sore mouth.

Wishing him a speedy recovery now he is on the antivirals.

Dinasourdi · 27/11/2023 15:21

He was able to have sone yogurt but since yesterday he’s also stopped having that as it just became too painful for him and he hasent got this from any relatives and everyone else in the house are fine so I really don’t know where he could have gotten this from and yes the doctor did say he’s looks very lethargic and I am gonna give the apple puree another try but the fever has now lasted for a a week and a half. I am just really angry at the doctors for giving him antibiotics for tonsillitis when he dosent even have it especially when he could have been given the antivirals in the 96 hours of the sores but instead was given antibiotics when he didn’t need em. Just completely lost my trust in the doctors as this is not the first time it happened when he didn’t need antibiotics for tonsillitis 3 weeks ago but instead had thrush.

Oh bless his socks. This is really hard going on both of you. Are you still in the hospital? If not, please don’t hesitate to go back if you feel it’s warranted. Your poor ds must be exhausted from trying to fight this off and lack of nourishment.

hedgehoglurker · 27/11/2023 17:01

Did they take swabs? If so, they probably have to wait for these results before prescribing antivirals. I know you feel angry that your baby is hurting, but unless you are aware that they went against protocol, until the swab results came through they were probably using their best judgement by prescribing antibiotics.

Despite being over 96 hours, they will hopefully still shorten the infection period.

Dinasourdi · 27/11/2023 17:20

Yes they did take the swab but the antibiotics was prescribed last week but from urgent care as the doctor believed it was tonsillitis. Two days ago I was at the children’s unit and the doctor there said to me to stop the antibiotics because he dosent have tonsillitis but has herpes even tho it has been more than 96 hours the doctor has prescribed antivirals it’s some tablet that I need to dissolve in water for 5 days and todays just the second day using it. But I am just annoyed at the fact that he could have gotten the antivirals last week instead of getting antibiotics for something he dosent have. So that’s a mistake from the doctors side. can’t even trust the nhs anymore. Completely just lost faith. My little one has lost so much weight and is just looking so pale and tired.

@Cornettoninja this is 10x harder for him to fight this off when he has 8 allergies and just 3 weeks ago had a 5 day course of antibiotics because once agn the doctor thought he had tonsillitis ended up being thrush so given another 7 day course of nystatin and now 3 weeks later had 1 day of antibiotics which are now stopped and now having antivirals.

Ask the dr if you can give him probiotics. If he's had diarrhoea for a while he will have flushed all the good bacteria out of his system. My son's paediatrician explained years back that this in turn prolongs the diarrhoea. I hope he recovers soon. Poor darling.

Superscientist · 28/11/2023 17:30

How does his food allergies manifest?
My daughter has 20 food allergies and these give her loose stools and pain. I don't know if it is connected but her bodies response to everything is diarrhoea. Moving house 8 poos in 2h. Colds diarrhoea, teething diarrhoea, any change diarrhoea. Her paediatrician thinks she "just" has a sensitive gut
