Toddler has lingering cough after a cold

My 13-month-old had a cough/cold a few weeks ago.

He started to feel better quite quickly but he still has an occasional loose cough. He might cough on a couple of occasions during the night and maybe again during the day. It just sounds like loose phlegm in his throat to me.

Otherwise, he seems fine. Happy, energetic, sleeping well (for a change), no temperature, hungry.

I feel like he just has some catarrh left over from his cold (he is generally quite a snotty boy - was diagnosed with neonatal rhinitis as a newborn) but was just wondering about other people’s experiences. Should I be worried?

The doctor says she can prescribe antibiotics as a precaution, but that seems like overkill to me! I really don’t think he has a bacterial chest infection??

I have a mild dust mite allergy which can become more sensory if I've had a cold. Do you think something like that might be going on?

I'd try all the usual advice for dust mite allergies and see if his symptoms improve and if they don't, then try the antibiotics Wink

I’m actually starting to think he may just have caught another bug (he’s got something constantly since he started nursery a couple of months ago).

It seemed like his cough was almost gone but now it’s getting worse again, he’s more snotty, and he was very unsettled at bedtime today. I’ve had a sore throat and slight cough for a few days as well, so I think maybe it’s just that???

He’s no temperature at the moment.

I’ll see how he goes. Loathe to give him unnecessary antibiotics. He’s already had two courses of amoxicillin recently when he was feeling very poorly with an ear infection and then a skin infection, and his tummy isn’t the greatest at the best of times.

Does sound like it could be another big then Flowers

If his tummy is a bit off, have you tried him with a probiotic?

His tummy has been weird for like over a month now! Just very loose, yellow poos about 4-5 times per day.

We’re trying lactose free now which seems to have reduced the frequency of the poos but not improved the consistency or colour.

I’ll look into probiotics!
