Missed movicol dose help

Insomniafromworrying · 15/10/2023 14:04

My son had the major clear out 3 months ago and now he is in 2 sachet of movicol as maintenance.. We started to wean him off and I was giving him 5ml less everyday from the 2 sachet of movicol.
We missed to give him yesterday because his temperature was 39 and he was so poor. This morning he done rabbit dropping from pooing perfect for months. I don’t know what to do now, as he has school tomorrow.
i will increase one sachet today but worried if it causes diarrhoea in school or it’s not enough to clear him 😢

Based only on experience, not any medical training, but after three months of maintenance I think it’s unlikely that one missed dose will have caused another blockage. I think it’s probably more likely due to being poorly and dehydrated. I’d push lots of fluids and continue with his regular dosing from now on. Keep an eye on his bowel movements for the next few days. If they go back to normal I would resume your usual maintenance/weaning schedule. I’d only increase the dose if there are more instances of rabbit dropping stools.

Well I missed both 2 sachets yesterday purposely to be honest because he looked unwell and dehydrated, I couldn’t push movicl through him . It just felt wrong :( it’s scary not knowing. I don’t want him to
go through the blockage because that was a major nightmare !

I suppose you could try upping the dose today, and then going back to normal tomorrow, just to give things an extra kick. But like you I’d be worried about any effects at school.

But you’re absolutely right about not wanting a blockage to return. We had to do disimpaction with DS three times before we cleared it and I never want to go back there again. He was on maintenance for a year and medication free for almost two years now, and we still get stressed if he goes more than one day without pooing!
