Toddler in leg cast

Any tips on getting a child to walk with leg cast?

Son had a fall and ended up with swollen foot, doc couldn’t see any fracture in the x ray but has put him in cast just in case.

Any tips on suitable clothing and ways to keep child entertained in this situation would be fab.

Have been told he can go to nursery but needs to stay away from water play, sand and soil as it could get into cast and would be highly irritating.

Nursery say he can’t come until he’s mobile with the cast.

DS was in a leg cast when he was 2y3m for a month. He had a toddler fracture.

I bought more baggy jogging bottoms for ease of getting them on and over his cast.

Gave him sponge baths.

But within a day, he was crawling around with it which really surprised me. He became mobile pretty quickly, but wasn’t ever able to walk with it. He did stand after around 3 weeks, but as I say, he had an actual fracture so yours may not be that bad.

Oh it’s tough when they’re that young!

I fully expected him to be sitting on the sofa for days before he even attempted to move, but the day after his cast, I was in the hallway and I turned around and he was right behind me on the floor! So I didn’t need to do much in terms of keeping him entertained - he happily crawled or bum shuffled around the entire time.

I also bought socks for 3-6 year olds, so I could put socks over his feet and the cast to keep them warm when we were outside.

My Dd was just over 3 when she had a toddler fracture. It took a few days for her to feel comfortable walking on it - she was so fast when she got used to it!
It might take him a few days to get used to the feeling of it.
I used bed socks with the grip on the bottoms to over the cast.

Hope he makes a quick recovery.
