Broken collarbone

D13 broke her collarbone at school 9 days ago. Drs strike at A&E and we felt a little rushed through but it was a complete break, she got a calico sling with advice to take it off in three days. Not her first collarbone break - 20 years ago it healed v quickly. We had a virtual fracture clinic appt 5 days later.

she was in considerable pain for these five days. Moved from bed to sofa but was eating and could go to the loo. An appt to get a sling for better support was given for Monday and recommendation to get cocodamol over the counter.

She was the same over the weekend. By Monday was worse and we got the new sling. Again a strike and few staff working in the hospital. The following day she is in complete agony: crying, not eating, trying not to wee, not moving, not on her phone. Couldn’t move her into the car to go to A&E again. She was not going to the loo. I called 111 and they prescribed codeine. If not better in 24 hrs, go back to A&E. 24 hrs later, she is still in considerable pain, but eating, watching tv, but not moving.

Was trying to see if it would further improve, but it seems the same. I have to take her to the toilet, she has her period and I am changing period pants - she is mortified. Has not showered or changed. This isn’t right, is it? We have no follow up appt. We are worried it isn’t healing correctly and it has now been 10 days. I should go back to A&E? What would you do?

Hi OP. I would go back to A&E. Hope she is better soon

Thank-you. I was ready to go this morning but she is going to try having a shower. If she cannot, we are going in!

How is your daughter now, OP? I would echo @bluebellsanddaisies23‘s sentiments and go back to hospital if she wasn’t feeling right still

Did you mean 2 years not 20 years ago assuming your DD is 13 now?

id be worried about the not weeing thing. Is she drinking enough? Has she somehow picked up a UTI as well?

That doesn't sound right, poor DD.

DS is a similar age and broke his quite badly recently, He's never good with any pain/ illness/ discomfort (absolute whinger tbh) ) but his pain was completely manageable with ibuprofen and after 3 days he didn't even need that. DH was similar when he broke his.

I hope you went back to the hospital and got her checked out again?

Thanks for all your comments. We did go back and the sling had been fitted incorrectly and her bones had overlapped. It seems the orthopaedic surgeon and dr kinda disagreed with what to do. But the upshot is that they are trying to get gravity to bring the bones together better. They told me to get some phenergan to help relax her muscles, but at 4pm on a Sunday every pharmacy I tried had sold out so my till try my usual pharmacy tomorrow.

Dr basically said if there was no improvement come back in two days.
