Daft question about HPV vaccine and warts

DS has a wart developing on his finger. We're treating it and it's going away.
He will shortly be due his HPV vaccine and my friend said there was no point him having it as he already had HPV. I was unaware warts were caused by the HPV virus.
So does he have HPV for good now? What about his cancer risk? Is it worth being vaccinated?

The hpv that causes warts won't be the same as the hpv that causes cervical/penile cancers as there are low risk and high risk types.

And of course its still worth having the vaccine

Hi OP,
you are correct in saying HPV can cause warts, however there are more than 150 strains of HPV. Some of these strains cause cancer, and are the ones which the vaccine will target. So I would certainly recommend he still gets the vaccine.

Thank you for both taking the time to respond. I did try google but it's very unclear. I will definitely get him vaccinated anyway.

It just threw me a bit. There's been a lot of cervical cancer on the female side if the family plus an incident of throat and neck cancer in a dad of our acquaintance so I see how devastating these cancers can be. I was worrying about DD as well who also had a wart as a young child, was obviously vaccinated (in fact I was so keen during lockdown so I paid for it privately as school vaccinations weren't running).

Hopefully it's just a strain of annoying warty HPV then.....

The strains that cause warts are not the same as the high-risk strains. 100% worth having the vaccine.
