My son has had a temp for 8 days no other symptoms, fine in himself. Now his skin looks like this I’m panicking. We have GP appt at 4pm but should I take him to a&e?

Hi OP, has his skin ever looked like this before? I would call your GP and see if they can squeeze you in otherwise I would pop to A&E. Has he got a rash anywhere / lethargic?

Agree with above. Could be mottled yes but mottling can happen with fever - if he’s lethargic / not feeding/ wet nappies/ can’t get fever down you’ll likely be sent straight to a&e by gp anyway.

It is a bit mottled, but honestly with 3dc I'd say with all of them if they had a fever their skin looked like that, and never was it worrying.

Go by how they are in themselves often. If they're floppy, not eating/drinking, not producing wet nappies, high pitched cry, not responding to you/things they normally would, etc. then that's more of a worry.

I would be seeing the GP with a fever for 8 days, but wouldn't be going to A&E if he seems fine in himself.

What did the doctor say?

my skin looks like this all the time!!!

My DS had skin like this once and I freaked out. I spoke with 111 and they had a pediatrician call me at 8pm. Was told mottled skin is normal in lots of children. It showed quite vividly on DS complexion.

Hope your DS is okay and is feeling better soon. Hopefully seeing the GP has helped.

How did it go? Good shout getting him checked out.

So the mottled skin isn’t a concerned if he’s feeling well, the GP confirmed. GP has prescribed him some antibiotics as think he has ear infection. However I’m now so worried, all evening his temp stay at 38.1, with calpol. Then I checked again an hour ago and it has gone down to 35.4, I’ve checked every 5 mins for the last hour and it’s been between 35.2 - 35.9.

I just spoken to 111 again, didn’t seem concerned and a GP will call me within 24 hours. I’m so worried, high to low temp doesn’t sound good.

We had this with high to low temp and mottled skin. Called 111 and they sent an ambulance but from that point on no one was concerned about the low temp. Doctors in a&e said it was probably because I'd given paracetamol and ibuprofen and it had brought it right down. Obviously if concerned get checked out!

Sueretiredawhileago · 22/09/2023 10:10

I had many a night worrying about a low temp after ibuprofen. No doctor was ever worried. One of the most important things a doctor said to me was ‘do you think your child is seriously ill.’ I.e if they seem fine they probably are fine!

how is he this morning
