Unexplained fever for a week, am I over worrying?

Sorry to post again, I just can’t sleep as worried. DS is 2, his fever started a week ago, it’s now constant, calpol helps.

We saw a doctor yesterday, check led his ears, but nothing else. (DS was screaming). He’s absolutely fine in himself, eating, playing as normal. What could it be? Is normal to have a temp for no reason?

I’m going to call GP tomorrow to check for UTI, just worried in the meantime

Hmmmmm you poor things, it’s awful when you don’t know what’s wrong ☹️whats His fever sitting at before calpol? Has it always been constant this week or is that new? And when you say he was crying too much for gp to do anything else other than check ears is that normal for him?

Tangofantastic · 20/09/2023 23:33

All good signs that fever comes done with calpol, and he’s eating and playing normally. All points to a pesky virus that’s just taking time to clear (unless fever is very high?)

Sophie2525 · 21/09/2023 08:07

Fever goes up to 39, he has no sore throat or pain I can tell. I’m worried it’s a UTI

Why do you think it’s a UTI specifically ? Can you get a sample to look at and smell ?

AllGoingOnA · 21/09/2023 08:12

Our 3 yo DS had this a couple of weeks ago. High fever for 8 days. No other symptoms. We went to the GP and were sent to the hospital because the fever was so persistent. Urine dip was NAD, nothing in the ears or throat. Then as quickly as it started it disappeared! Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 21/09/2023 08:14

Covid? It doesn’t always present with every symptom

M103 · 21/09/2023 08:18

With my kids, fever without symptoms was either COVID or UTI.

CurlewKate · 21/09/2023 08:34

If he's eating and playing and happy what made you take his temperature?

Sophie2525 · 21/09/2023 09:27

@CurlewKate because he was clearly burning up

OK. I have always been a fan of treat the child not the number-I honestly wouldn't worry. Easy to say, I know!

Hello @Sophie2525 so sorry to hear about your little one. I know exactly how you feel because I’m going through the same thing with my DC who is nearly 5. Have posted on another similar thread a few days ago.

DC has a low grade fever up to 38.7 and has been like this for nearly 2 weeks now. The only other symptom he has is a cough which he has had for nearly 2 months now after we all caught a bug over the summer. Everyone else has recovered and is a normal temp but his is high every day. Been to the GP twice and A&E once, had Covid tests and Urine sample all negative. GP prescribed antibiotics which did lower his temp, but 2 days after finishing the course it came back again. A&E think it’s most probably viral but I have never experienced anything like this before with either of my DC where a fever lasts for so long. And usually when they’re ill they are lethargic, off their food, unable to sleep in the night etc but with this is there’s nothing like the usual ill behaviour.

I have health anxiety at the best of times and this is just setting me off so when I saw your post I knew I had to reply and share just so you know you’re not alone. I really hope and pray your little one’s temp comes back down to normal as soon as.

Sunshineclouds11 · 22/09/2023 10:43

I was going to say UTI

My son has a temp and no other symptoms and it was a UTI

Strugglebus2323 · 07/12/2023 09:33

My DD 3 years old has had an awful cough and persistent temp for nearly 2 weeks. 2 trips to the Dr's and a call to 111 and no one seems concerned. Just said it's a virus. No bacterial signs to be seen. 1 round of penicillin which did absolutely nothing and here we are still with temps and drinking calpol like it's a drink. The calpol works but we can't live on it forever.

Is this normal???? She's OK ish. Still eating, weeing, being defiant and arguing with me all day. Just wanted to know some reassuring stories really as my brain always goes worst case scenario and I'm starting to think her immune system just isn't working.

Just to kite, this is her first winter in nursery so I was expecting illness, but just not this blooming long. Help a stressed, anxious mama out 🥵

Aklein38 · 07/02/2024 14:58

@Strugglebus2323 @MothersJumpers @Sophie2525 did this ever get resolved?

My 21 month DS has had a fever for 13 days. Very high the first few days (40.7) and 38.4 since. We have seen the GP 5 times and A&E once. He had flu diagnosed last week so was told it would resolve but he still has a temp! I've never known anything like this. Took him to GP today and urine checked (clear) and given antibiotics as a precaution. How long did your children's fever's last and do you know what it was? I'm exhausted and terrified it is something worse.

Strugglebus2323 · 08/02/2024 14:41

So it lasted a solid 3 weeks. Every time I thought it settled, it rose back up again. Then eventually it stopped. No idea what it was. Dr just kept saying viral. Antibiotics did nothing. Made it worse. I think she had thst 100 day cough thing. Whatever it was held on. A while

Aklein38 · 08/02/2024 19:36

She had a temp for 3 weeks?! That's so long bless her. Mine's had it a full 2 weeks now and I'm going out of my mind. I just really hope it settles soon. Everytime I think it's going down, it jumps back up again. I dread the evenings as that's when his temp is the highest :(

I just hope it's nothing serious and he gets over it soon!

gettingprepped · 06/03/2024 18:32

Just found this thread as DD 3yo is suffering with an on-off fever, for over a week now, along with headaches, a bit of an cough, and lately complaints of ear pain. Would be keen to hear of anyone with similar symptoms ever got an answer?! Thanks.

Aklein38 · 06/03/2024 23:12

With my son they decided to treat with antibiotics in the end just in case he had a secondary bacterial infection. Fever was gone after 24 hours of starting so it may have been bacterial or that the flu was finally on its way out. Lasted just over 12 days in total. If she is complaining of ear pain you might want to take her to a doctor in case it's an ear infection and needs antibiotics although they are usually quite painful so she would probably be complaining about it lots ans having quite high fevers.

Realitea · 12/03/2024 15:54

I should’ve read this before posting! Looks like there is a nasty virus going around as my dd has had it for 8 days now and temp is around 39 every day! Antibiotics haven’t done anything yet but only been on them for 24 hrs

gettingprepped · 12/03/2024 19:24

Interesting to know others are seeing similar. We lost the temp after about 10 days (though it wasn’t every day, and mainly at night) but now two weeks later have a cough, some vomiting and complaints of stomach ache. The ear pain disappeared the day it arrived. Very strange! She seems otherwise well in herself but might go back to GP if still poorly in a couple of days, as that’ll be 2 weeks since we last saw them.
