Fever - first or last?

Hi All,

My 4 year old DD has had a bit of a stuffy nose and a cough the last few days - back to preschool germs no doubt. This morning she woke with a fever of 38.2. I gave her calpol and ibuprofen during the day to bring it down, she was eating and drinking and in good form. Did complain of a sore ear and pain in her head though. This evening about 4pm she was very shivery and out of sorts, I checked her and she was up around 39.
We're actually away on holiday at the moment so the hotel arranged a doctors visit for us at a local practice. Doctor said he wasn't too worried, ears and throat look fine. Tummy OK. Chest fine. He commented it could be a virus "burning out". Is this a thing? I always thought fevers came first?
By the time she was coming out of GP her temp was down about 37.5 again and she was dancing around. So strange.
