Molluscum contagiosum

My son started with these spots about 2 years ago and he's getting more and more of them. They're red & pussy and sometimes they have gone infected and needed antibiotics. Docs won't do anything about them. I'm just worried they're never going to go or they're going to turn into something more serious. Has anyone got any advice please x

Following as we are in a similar position with youngest DC

Raaraayouareanoisy · 28/08/2023 19:28

Apple cider vinegar on the spots and plasters ontop! Miracle cure!

TeddyBeans · 28/08/2023 19:32

Teatree can work! What got rid of it for my son was catching hand foot and mouth. It triggered an immune response which molluscum contagiosum doesn't do on its own

Onceuponaheartache · 28/08/2023 19:32

There is no treatment for mollescum unfortunately, you just need to be strict on washing towels after every use, not wearing clothes that have touched it more than once and boil washing bedding every few days. We were told it can take up to 6 months to clear fully.

However. To still have it 2 years on is unusual. I would be asking for a second opinion from a different gp or a referral to peads dermatology

Molludab. Will be gone in a week

Ilovelurchers · 28/08/2023 19:43

My daughter, and a number of her classmates, had it for about a year around the time they started school - i remember it looked awful (though I don't think it was especially painful) and I was terrified I would catch it on my face!

It DID pass in the end, but nothing we tried made any difference, and from what I recall the advice was just to wait it out. Do speak to your GP tho if you are concerned. Do you know for sure it is molluscum? I ask because my daughter also used to suffer from another rash, which a dermatologist diagnosed in the end, which was apparently very rare (and also harmless- so much so I now forget the name!)

Callmecuppa · 28/08/2023 19:45

My daughter had them for about 2 years, towards to end, they were awful and the skin around them was very sore. We had hydrocortisone cream prescribed a few times to help clear up the skin. They did all go, soon after being very bad. If I remember rightly, they kind of popped after being really angry looking. You'd never know she'd had them now.

Jiminycricketp · 28/08/2023 19:48

I used Molludab on my son and they went in a few weeks.

fruitypancake · 28/08/2023 20:05

We tried everything all at the same time and they did go .. molludab .. picking biggest , plasters on them Epsom salt baths

shabbaa · 28/08/2023 20:09

My son had this for 2 years and eventually just went away on its own. Was really annoying and I just wanted to pop them all but didn't.

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 29/08/2023 04:08

Both of mine had these when they were little, I hated them! We tried all the cures but they eventually went away on their own. It's hard waiting it out though, I feel your pain.

whoruntheworldgirls · 29/08/2023 05:23

Following. My daughter had 1, kept it covered and everything clean, it popped and we got an antibacterial cream from the GP, thought we were sorted but weeks last she now has 4 Sad

Fraaahnces · 29/08/2023 05:34

I used the strongest Benzoyl Peroxide Cream I could find (for pimples) on them after using a sterile needle to pop them and remove the “pearl” when DD2 had them. She didn’t scar and they didn’t spread. I got onto it early. The trick is to dry the absolute F out of them.

BusterGonad · 29/08/2023 05:38

You need to pick them. Poke a pin in them. The body will 'remember' to fight them and they all go. Without popping them the body is happy to blod along with them. Popping them gets the bodies response and it fights them off. I did this. My son had them for a few weeks only. Once popped apply a plaster as they are very contiguous when open.

BusterGonad · 29/08/2023 05:39

Mirrormirror2 · 29/08/2023 07:08

Another vote for molludab, worked 100% for us and DD had about 30 at one point!

Eliza121 · 29/08/2023 07:12

Colloidal silver. You can get it on Amazon. Cleared my daughters skin up very quickly

spottydoodles · 29/08/2023 07:20

Both of my sons had this. Eldest for quiet a few months and they were on his arms and trunks.
what we did - and which is not advised. Is to pop them, and pop most of them!
you need to get all of the ‘pearl’ out of the middle and there will be a lot of blood coming out. Clean it all up straight away and don’t let the blood/white bits spread.
within 1/2 weeks they were all gone!

whoruntheworldgirls · 13/09/2023 13:29

After this thread i have popped the 3 my daughter has on her leg, used Benzoyl Peroxide Cream after popping and they do seem to be shrinking

zoomiesdrivememad · 13/09/2023 13:43

My sons had this for about 9 months, they're finally nearly gone!

They start off quite white, turn yellowy, then red, then burst and then heal.

Took him to the Drs a couple of times when they looked like they were getting worse but they just prescribed a bathing lotion, similar to what you would use on eczema etc but I don't think it made much difference tbh.

None of us have caught them either.

Covidwoes · 14/09/2023 06:27

My youngest DD had them recently on her bum and the backs of her legs. I used colloidal silver spray, and popped two of the spots on her bum. This cleared them up in a couple of weeks.

rs12 · 26/06/2025 11:50

Hi all, hoping you can help. My son has this (caught from his sister). He’s 11 months but I can see it spreading. My daughters didn’t go for 2 yrs and his is right on his forehead. Did anyone here use modulab on a child this young?

FrenchandSaunders · 26/06/2025 11:53

Yea tree oil .. dabbed on each spot neat. Got rid of my DDs after a long time and she had loads all over her torso.
