Third hand smoke 2 month old

Hi,
I am super cautious around people that smoke with my baby and make sure that if someone has smoked they wash their hands, take their jackets off and wait an hour before holding my 2 month old. I was at a BBQ today though and my BIL passed my baby to his partner who smokes, I had no idea when they had last smoked or how long they had him before I came outside from the toilet. I took my baby back and he stank of smoke as it was on my BILs partners coat.
I'm really concerned he has inhaled all the third hand smoke from her coat as it was on his clothing and now I don't want him to go to bed tonight because of SIDs. Is one time going to affect him or would SIDs be more likely from it if we did it loads?

I know third hand smoke is a cause of SIDs so I'm worried

Thanks

Please don't worry. Smoke off someone's jacket one time will not harm your baby.
They just give this advice because if baby lives with a smoker and is repeatedly coming into contact with smoke that way it could be harmful even if the smoker is smoking outside. It doesn't mean you need to worry just because someone with smoke on their jacket touched your baby briefly one time.

Hi OP, I can tell you are beside yourself with worry, but want to reassure you everything is alright. A few things to consider:
2mo babies are way more resilient than newborns
Bath baby and put clean clothes on
Continue to follow the safe sleep guidelines (never leave baby to sleep alone etc)

If it will give you greater peace of mind, do more skin-to-skin today and the next few days.

Your baby will be fine. I remember the anxiety over my first. You’ll be able to relax with your second. 😊

@Brightandshining @7Worfs thank you both so so much u have put my mind at ease a lot, I took him inside and wiped him down with baby wipes and changed his clothes lol. He fell asleep on the way home so once he is awake I'll bath him. Thanks again ❤️

I know the thought of smoke on a baby is awful but my husband grew up with a mum who smoked during pregnancy and in the house and he is fine, zero lung problems and that was a lot of smoke! It was a tiny amount for your baby, probably no different to car fumes on a busy road.

@bryceQ ❤️❤️ thank you x

Bbq fumes are also carcinogenic , that doesn't appear to have bothered you ?

MarriedToVictorFuckingMeldrew · 01/12/2023 00:33

Jeez 😳

Jvmumma · 01/12/2023 07:14

@tkwal lmao there is always one! Firstly the garden is ridiculously long and the BBQ was being cooked right at the other end no where near any of us, there were no fumes!
Secondly maybe educate yourself on smoke inhalation for babies and how dangerous it is even third hand smoke!

Lastly @MarriedToVictorFuckingMeldrew this is my 3rd child and I have always been extremely careful when it comes to smoke around then because it is very dangerous. I was worried and I asked people's opinions for reassurance even though deep down I knew he would be okay it is good to hear what other people think too and that is more than okay, coming on here to shame a mum is not however!

Op I hear you because I’m the exact same, baby number three due and in dread of the chain smoker relatives wanting a hold. You are right to be careful as it’s very well researched that smoke is harmful for babies,I think your baby will be fine but you are right to be bothered and concerned!

Jvmumma · 01/12/2023 21:56

@Yummymummy2020 thank you, this was a few months ago now, my baby is almost 6 months now, he was fine like you said 😁

I have been very strict and said people that smoke can't hold him for an hour after and have to wash their hands and change their clothes / take a coat off. It has been fine and he hasn't been exposed to any other than that one time. Your baby will also be fine. It's scary though how dangerous it can be xxx
