Toddler's weight and height off the chart

18 month old DS was on the 75th percentile when he was born. He kept to it for a while and then jumped to 90th. Now both weight and height are on 99th percentile! He has a very good diet with no junk and is very active, plenty of outdoor play etc. Should I worry? HV wasn't worried but wanted to check other people's experiences!

Someone has to be at the upper and lower ends. If the health visitor is happy then I wouldn't worry.

Are you and his dad particularly small so DC is an anomaly?

Both my boys varied between 95th and 99th centile at times and are now tall adults 6'3 and 6'2. Eldest was 9lb 13 at birth and younger was only 8lb 2 but were pretty much both on the same centiles after a year or so. .

If the HV wasn’t worried than I wouldn’t be either. Obese children do grow taller younger but that doesn’t sound like it applies because if it did I’m sure the HV would have said and they don’t normally calculate BMI before 2 anyway plus it’s normal for young toddlers to sometimes be a bit chubby. How tall are you and Dad? If you’re both tall then he probably will be too.

You know, I would just say what is it that you're going to worry about if people say you should worry? That you have a big kid? There's not much you can do about that, you're not going to shrink him. Some people exist in bigger bodies.

Mine was 99th for height and weight all the way through now 98% and at school he's one of the tallest but several kids are taller/heavier than him. His weight percentile is also fine. High centiles don't necessarily mean obese.
