Viral Meningitis in newborn

My DS was diagnosed with VM on day 4. He had been fine & then I saw he wasn't. He spent a week in hospital. Home now.

I'm asking a question I'm almost scared to ask but I just wondered if anyone had experience of this & what the prognosis has been for a baby affected if so.

TIA x

Oh bless you both. What type was it? My baby had parechovirus meningitis at 8 weeks. She was poorly to start off with and the studies I could find said 50/50 chance of developmental problems. She is absolutely fine however, hit all her milestones early and you would never know!

@SoLittleTimeToday Glad your LO is ok now! I'm not sure on what type, Entero Virus Viral Meningitis is what we were told if that means anything...

I had meningococcal meningitis when I was 2.5. I was in the hospital for 8 weeks and unfortunately it has left me with hearing damage.

I lost all my hearing in my right ear and 70% in the left.

I hope your little one is ok x

@Soubriquet We have been told hearing loss can be a result.. he's had a hearing test since & all ok so far. Thank you for your comment, it sounds like you learnt to adapt very young xx

Yeah I’ve adapted very well. I don’t remember what it’s like to have full hearing so in a way I didn’t lose anything

My DS had viral meningitis when he was 8 weeks old. He was in hospital for a week. Worst week of my life. Especially when he had the lumbar puncture 😢

He didn’t speak until he was 3 but we can’t be sure if that was connected to the VM or if it was just speech delay/having sisters that always spoke for him.

He met all his other milestones fine and all hearing tests etc have been fine too.

My LO had it at a few weeks old. They're absolutely fine now, no developmental problems at all thankfully!

Thank you both for your replies @shzibssbns @GoodnightJude1 glad your little ones are doing ok. It's really reassuring to hear.

Hi I know this is an old thread but my 4 week old son has been diagnosed with enteroviral meningitis. Did your little one have any long term effects from it?

bumblebeebo · 17/04/2025 11:40

Hey @Syp832sorry to hear that. How’s he doing? My son is 21 months now. He’s fine. As far as we know! My daughter who is now 7 also suffered a stroke at birth so I know all too well the watch & wait approach & the anxiety that goes with it.
