Dark mottled patch on child's neck

My 7yo DC has developed a patch of darker, mottled skin on their neck on one side (not dirt!). It's slightly rougher than the normal skin. It's darker than a tan would be on them so don't think it's that. Hard to get a photo but have attached my attempt. Any ideas?

I have a large patch like that on my leg and a small one in my arm but it’s pigmentation. Could it be that? My dc has some too, alongside eczema which seems to make hers worse.

My daughter had this the other day and she has health problems which I don't think is linked. I assumed it was dirt build up where she hasn't been washing properly!

If you're certain it's not dirt try a moisturiser. My son's neck gets patchy like that and washing doesn't clear it. It disappears with a bit of moisturiser

My friends son had this can't remember what it was called in his case. I would get a GP to look at it

Does look like pigmentation yes! Definitely new though. I don't have anything similar, neither do the rest of the family.

Good call, I'll try that.

That would be a fair assumption here too if they were left to their own cleaning devices 😬 But has definitely been washed regularly and thoroughly!

Thanks, I'm going to see if it fades over the next couple of weeks and if not, send a pic to the GP

My nine year old daughter has a lot of this hyperpigmentation, on her right arm and the right side of her neck. I have been wondering if it's worth a visit to the doctor - in itself I don't think it's particularly worrying, but I'm concerned it could be a symptom of something more important.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to get it checked? My kid never has any skin conditions except the odd post viral rash, never had eczema, dry skin, nothing - which is why I noticed it! Sure it's nothing but it's 'new' which always worries me (and usually for no reason).

I have something called Cafe au Lait marks, some from birth but some developed later, maybe it's them

LightSpeeds · 13/08/2023 23:04

It may be tinea versicolor.

Tessisme · 13/08/2023 23:14

Probably not this, but when DS1 was about 3, he had something similar on his leg. I remember panicking like mad, Googling, intending to phone GP next morning. Until I spotted the open tube of gradual fake tan ... 😅

Love this 😂😂😂

No fake tan in the house but that's cracked me up.

Could be a cafe au lair mark, don't think it looks like tinea versicolor but will take another look tomorrow.

hi, what did this turn out to be? My 4.5 year old has a similar discolouration on his neck that came up in the last week or so.
