9 year old's privates hurt on and off

OK, so every now and again ds complains that he hurts down there but is obviously embarrassed to go into much detail. It only seems to last for a couple of minutes but has been happening over the past few months.
I'm just wondering if he's getting erections and if this is normal at this age or something else?

It just seems to come on randomly and then go away. He's not complaining going to the toilet or anything and no tummy aches.
