Toddler coughing since 3 weeks

DS (16 months old) has just started nursery and been picking up all sorts of bugs and has a cough that has been lingering since about 3-4 weeks. Otherwise he is really well, no fever, good appetite, good spirits, playing and running around. Do you know why a cough could linger so long - would you take your child to the GP or wait a bit longer?

Hi, I wouldn’t wait 3 weeks to take a toddler to the drs for anything out of the ordinary.

Could be lingering on for chest infection, asthma? Hope you get it sorted!

Chronic cough could be asthma, no need to wheeze to be asthmatic

I should have been more clear - he was examined 2 weeks ago as he was really unsettled. They found nothing concerning and was advised to give Calpol if temp goes up. He improved massively since then but the cough is lingering!

My DS had a cough that went on for ages and ages when he was about 1 1/2 yo. Took him to the docs and they said likely asthma (too young to do a peak flow) but he was super poorly with it (he stopped breathing several times and had lots of chest infections). At one point he was on so many inhalers and the coconut medicine. I was asthmatic as a child, as was DH, and poorly chests run in the family. He’s now 10 and grown out of it. I would go back to Gp for a second opinion OP.
