How accurate are ear thermometers?! Recommendations for better ones

What is says really, my 13 month old has a cold and felt warmer than normal earlier. We have the Braun ear thermometer but it gives different readings in each ear. Left ear said 38.9 but right ear said 37.8 so very confused! Have given him calpol and he’s eaten all his dinner and asleep now so hopefully calpol is working.

Not sure how accurate they are, any recommendations for a better thermometer?

He might have an ear infection, that would make one ear hotter than the other. We have the Braun one and it seems fine, had it three years or so and sometimes temps do vary from ear to ear. Always a slight difference.

He’s just finished a course of antibiotics for an ear infection so maybe it’s the last of the infection still? Thanks!

Our GP uses a Braun one too. Reassuring to see as we've a Braun one at home.

We have a Braun one and it does this all the time. I usually go for a best of three 😬
