Possible diabetes

My son is nearly 10, for the past few weeks me and a few others have noticed his breath smells like sweetcorn. Always hungry, thirsty, frequent urination alot of the symptoms. My mum is type 2 and has leant me her blood sugar monitor, first thing on waking I did his blood sugar and it was 6.1. Of course I'll be making him a doctors appointment but just looking for anyone with experience?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

6.1 is not terrible but it is high for a fasting blood glucose for a non-diabetic person. There can be other causes such as infections etc. But I think you are correct in getting possible diabetes investigated. If your son appears to get worse before you see a doctor, definitely go to emergency care to get him checked out.

Yes my mum said she'd expect it to be lower with fasting. Is there a difference with adult and children blood sugar on readings?

Are you already in A&E waiting to be seen, this is the sort of thing they would usually triage very quickly.

If you think he has it this is a matter for A&E

@Speach did you get your son seen?

Hi yes sorry for late reply, his bloods were normal! His breath isn't fruity as such or sweet. Smells like actual sweetcorn very bizarre!
