DS started having tics! Or is it OCD?

My DS who recently turned 6 started developing what looks like tics. He is hard blinking, makes funny noises like grunting or blowing sometimes he stomps his feet to the rythm in his head. im not sure if it’s a tic or maybe an OCD?
he refuses to go to doctor to the point of tears and I hate to reinforce that something is wrong.
Does any MN have any idea what to do? Leave it? Does he need medication?
Im worried that he might be bullied at school because of it… I’m also worried that it might develop into Tourette’s or is it a sign of childhood anxiety? Has anyone gone through the same with their kiddos?

Your GP would want to see him but you may get away with a film depending on how open/sensitive they are.

My GP used to insist on seeing my child but once they saw it was detrimental to them has been OK interacting through me.

Hello, we are in a similar situation. How is your son doing with his tics now? Thanks.

Hi @User79853257976 ! Sorry I haven’t seen your post here for a while. My son is much better now thanks! I’ve started giving him magnesium & iron supplements (magnesium at least 200 mg for 3 months) and liquid iron, combined with MTFH supplements. Made sure he has a very predictable life (bed at the same time, pizza every Friday, Football every Saturday etc) and also talked to him making sure that he knows he’s doing it. All of the above has been recommended by a fantastic paediatrician and made a massive difference!

Ah thank you so much. We’ve been giving 50-100mg magnesium but I’ll up it to 200. There has been some improvement but they get worse again if he is tired. He struggles to fall to sleep and I have to lie with him for over an hour. We’ve got some magnesium cream as well. I will look at iron supplements too. Thank you for replying x

@User79853257976 your son does sound a lot like my son! Hopefully magnesium helps. Cream is a good idea 👍 Our doc was sure that the tics (if they don’t come with any other symptoms) are just a sign of a very sensitive nervous system and will resolve as DS matures. So upsetting to witness though. I think when we, mums, get too worried or upset it transfers onto our children… fingers crossed, you will see an improvement soon x
