Sacral Dimple

Hello! My 6 month old daughter has a sacral dimple, which she’s had since birth. I haven’t thought anything about it until a friend mentioned it looks pretty deep and I should get a GP to look at it. It wasn’t mentioned at her newborn examination or her 6 week check up! Worry has now set it and googling has took over! Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

I've got one, and it's never caused me the slightest issue in my life. Apparently my grandfather had it too.

My DD has this, mentioned it at her 6 week check and we got referred to the hospital as the GP couldn’t see the ‘bottom’ of the hole. Neuro consultant scared the living daylights out of me and made me think it was spina bifida but an MRI a few weeks later showed it was absolutely fine. She’s now a walking, fully recovered potty trained 2.5 year old.

Can you see the bottom of the dimple when holding it in that position? I assume nothing comes out of it? (fluid/faeces?) Yes- I would ask the GP to have a look.

My daughter has a deep one too. Caused her no issues. She's two and running around like a demon.

scrivette · 10/07/2023 22:22

DD has one (not as deep though) but it hasn't ever been mentioned to me at any checks.

wp65 · 10/07/2023 22:23

I think the main cause for concern would be spina bifida but it seems unlikely she'd have reached 6 months without any other concerns. Might be worth getting it looked at to set your mind at rest.

ClarificationNeeded · 10/07/2023 22:28

Ours was that deep with no problems. Do still get checked but I think you'd know by now if there was a problem.

ladyvivienne · 10/07/2023 22:30

I have one and so does my son.

Mine causes some pain at times - gets very sore. Son hasn't had any problems.

Blughbablugh · 10/07/2023 22:33

Both of my dc have it. Has caused them no problems and was checked at birth and reported no concerns.

Rainallnight · 10/07/2023 22:35

I have one and it’s never caused me an issue. I thought everyone did until really quite late in life 😳

LightSpeeds · 10/07/2023 22:37

Is it spina bifida occulta? Me and my children have this and it's not a problem.

Graciesmamma · 10/07/2023 23:18

Nothing was mentioned at her new born check or 6 week examination. But with it being so deep i’ve started to panic. I’ve not noticed any fluid coming out of it! And she seems absolutely fine, sat quite early around 15 weeks! Reached for her feet and puts them in her mouth! Currently wants to always be on her feet when being held!

Can’t see the bottom but haven’t noticed anything come out of it!

I have one, never caused me any issues

justanothermummma · 10/07/2023 23:22

My daughter had one, was picked up at newborn exam, they had no concerns and she's almost 3 now and thriving!

LadyWithLapdog · 10/07/2023 23:27

You can get a scan to put your mind at rest, though with otherwise normal development you shouldn’t worry.
