Broken foot and strange doctor

Threemangoes · 10/07/2023 21:24

So I spent 5 hours in A&e with my 12 year old and found out she has broken her foot. 3 bones (metatarsal) 10 days ago on sports day but there was no swelling on the day hence why no urgency.
She was still limping and sore to touch foot so I took her to check it out today.

Anyways the doctor refused to give her any brace or shoe and said that it will just get better by itself.

He didn't tell me what bones in the foot she has broken. Just said that you have broken 3 bones.

He asked if we wanted to see a bone doctor but don't really have to as they will say the same thing??

I came out of the A&e thinking she has a broken foot and no support for it. I still didn't know what has she broken in her foot. Why did I even go there?

Am I being unreasonable to feel really stupid? Are there any doctor mums here or someone with similar experience?

Inwardly weeping at the arrogance to correct A&E consultants.

Well done OP for getting your daughter a boot she didn't need against advice. Let's hope it helps and doesn't hinder. No need to hope- you know best.

No doubt a safeguarding referral will have gone in due to the late presentation and your behaviour in the department.

LillteSwim · 11/07/2023 14:26

You could taker her back for a second opinion or go to a walk in centre? I would also raise a complaint with PALS

A complaint about what?

Huh? It's safety and support for her broken foot.

You aren't a doctor and you pushed for something the doctor doesn't think is helpful.
Every single poster on here says you don't need a boot for a child's broken foot, based on medical advice. You think you know better.

I'd love to see you walk around in school on a broken foot without support.
Be a good girl and follow your doctor's advice. Don't ever question shhhhh!

I was walking around on a 12 hr hospital ward shift the day after I broke my foot. No boot. Probably sat down a lot less than a school kid. 🤷‍♀️

itsamedicalmystery · 11/07/2023 22:52

I appreciate you was seen after 10 days because they still couldn't walk properly. But what I was saying was that you was lucky, as at my local trusts (South Yorkshire - and I believe ICB wide), you wouldn't have got through the door with an injury over 5 days. You would have been referred back to the GP. So perhaps something to bare in mind for the future, it wasn't an accident and it wasn't an emergency if it happened 10 days ago. You need to go to the right point of care at the right time.

WELL WELL WELL LISTEN TO THIS EVERYBODY!
I'VE JUST HAD THE CALL FROM FRACTURE CLINIC. They recommend she wears the boot for 4 weeks from the day I visited A&E to support her mobility all day.
I did tell them I had to ask for the boot as the doctor wouldn't give her one and she said yes they try to give their best advice but we are the specialists.

So pleased I followed my gut instincts 😊

That's good. What a shame she had to go 10 days without support.

Threemangoes · 13/07/2023 10:57

LOL! So this is where your opinion comes from because you were fine so should everyone else. Are you some sort of Saint that we should follow you.
We are talking about a child's broken foot and how to support her for 6 weeks whilst it heals!
Anyways it turns out all you hormonal ladies were Wrong! So was the doctor at A&e.
I would like to see his smug face now when he made a sarcastic comment whilst we were leaving. He said well now you're gonna have a one really strong leg.

She was at home mostly supported very well which has helped her heal greatly!
Thanks for your concern!
Don't forget to follow your doctor's advice like a good girl even if it feels wrong 😉

Oh I absolutely love the fact that it's bothering you my concerns were right and the professional doctor at the A&e was condescending, rude and turns out wrong!!!

No, sadly I did once have a very poorly knee which required several hospital visits and all my mother said was that I had fat legs 😔 I would have loved to have had a mother who cared for me and fought my corner, the way the OP is doing for her DD.

Thank you ❤️
I'm sorry for your experience 😔
I do feel for all the rude ladies' children who might suffer at the hands of "professionals" because their mothers didn't follow their instincts.

@Threemangoes I should be getting a thorough service if once in a blue moon I need it.

You got exactly that.

You need to read my posts.

I did do and like others couldn't make must sense out of them.

eg this He didn't tell me what bones in the foot she has broken. Just said that you have broken 3 bones."

So how do you know she has broken 3 metatarsals? 🤔

This is why I asked you to read my posts. I Googled what the bones are called where it was hurting my DD. I confirmed with the fracture clinic today if I'm right. Yes she has broken her 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals.
Hope this helps you.

I think I'd just keep her off now im while it heals. As you said she was fine at home resting let her do that, no risk of extra school falls (is she prone to falling?) better than arguing with the doctors who have said & done exactly what my colleagues would have done.

Can you update your colleagues so they're not as unprofessional as the doctor discussed above and more people don't suffer at the hands of these professionals.

I hope you are right for the doctors' sake.

Soubriquet · 13/07/2023 15:55

I’m glad you were verified by insisting on a boot. I would have done the same if the doctor hadn’t explained why not.

My dd had a small fracture in her leg when she was 3 from bouncing on a trampoline. After an x-ray, doctor decided he wasn’t going to stress her out by putting a cast on, as it’s only a small one and she just needed to rest it. At 3, it was pretty easy to stick her in front of a tv with some food. It healed nicely.

Bit random there. A mother is concerned about her child’s broken foot..

These kids do like to keep us worried in one way or another 😅
Good to know your daughter healed nicely❤️
