Broken foot and strange doctor

Threemangoes · 10/07/2023 21:24

So I spent 5 hours in A&e with my 12 year old and found out she has broken her foot. 3 bones (metatarsal) 10 days ago on sports day but there was no swelling on the day hence why no urgency.
She was still limping and sore to touch foot so I took her to check it out today.

Anyways the doctor refused to give her any brace or shoe and said that it will just get better by itself.

He didn't tell me what bones in the foot she has broken. Just said that you have broken 3 bones.

He asked if we wanted to see a bone doctor but don't really have to as they will say the same thing??

I came out of the A&e thinking she has a broken foot and no support for it. I still didn't know what has she broken in her foot. Why did I even go there?

Am I being unreasonable to feel really stupid? Are there any doctor mums here or someone with similar experience?

Asking for a supportive boot for a broken foot isn't the same as asking antibiotics for a cold I don't think so.
I'd like to see you carry on going to school with a broken foot with no support.

Isn't that what she had been already doing for 10 days?

Threemangoes · 10/07/2023 23:32

Well I'd rather be "that" parent and make sure my daughter's foot is healing and safety is not compromised.

I was very polite and spoke calmly sharing my concerns that I need her foot to be supported and safe in school during school hours.

But what you've demanded is NOT going to make her foot any better, is it?

Threemangoes · 11/07/2023 00:47

nocoolnamesleft · 11/07/2023 00:39

No, as a professional the doctor should advise the clinically indicated treatment. Not be bullied into providing a non indicated treatment.

I hope you don't ever break your foot!!
The reason I went in is because my daughter was in pain because at school walking around with friends she has put strain on her broken foot and made it worse. The break is preventing her doing her usual activities so she needed support. Not fobbed off on painkillers at this age.

The op has insisted that her daughter is given a boot, even though it's not indicated for the injury and could actually make the foot weaker. Why??

Because she feels guilty for making the poor kid limp about with broken bones for ten days, most likely!

Huh? It's safety and support for her broken foot.

I'm fairness this time last year my daughter came off a scooter and cracked her elbow I threw and ice pack on and she went back out. A couple days later she kept complaining of the pain but was moving it. I just put hundred of cushions on underneath at night. A few days later I took her to a & e and she got an X-ray and the elbow had a wee fracture. Just a case of lots of pain relief and a sling for a few days and I got a call from a specialist to go over the scan in detail but there was no stooky for the arm. Yet she had a hip to foot stooky for her leg when she broke it and a boot (she was 1.5 lol)

Not as guilty as the professional doctor who fobbed her off with paracetamol.

That's interesting. I suppose 3 is really young and heals much quicker. Whereas my 12 year old is in school and can risk long lasting injury if she falls on it again.

Oh, so suddenly you are a qualified doctor now? A broken foot is quite a common injury, and often is just left to heal on its own. You sound like an absolute nightmare - and yes, you are exactly the type of person who demands antibiotics when the doctor says they aren't necessary.

Actually, when I have had a whole list of medical problems, several requiring inpatient care, I have gone along with the medical plans advised by the team with expertise in that area (several different teams as several unrelated problems), and as a result have seen good outcomes. What I have not done is make out that I know better than them, and demanded inappropriate treatment. I was hardly going to say "I've read up on my type of cancer on google, and you're wrong, I want to try something different with fuck all evidence base" was I?

Trainsplanesandfeet · 11/07/2023 00:54

OP you are insisting you know better than the professionals and then fuming because they didn’t follow your treatment plan not theirs.
The school issue is yours to manage- keeping your daughter from hurting her foot again because another kid jumps on it (or whatever imaginary incident you are thinking of) isnt eg job of the hospital it is yours and schools. He explained a boot risks weakening the muscles and does not improve outcomes medically.

Incidentally they would have been expected to consider a SS referral for such a delayed presentation for a fracture. Surprised that didn’t get mentioned. And if you kick up a stink about how much damage she has and how much it is needing to be iced and elevated after minimal activity it does beg the question why it took you TEN days after a known injury to seek medical review.

Threemangoes · 11/07/2023 00:54

Threenow · 11/07/2023 00:46

Isn't that what she had been already doing for 10 days?

And it wasn't working because the few days that she did go to school (we had strike days) she was still in discomfort with ice and elevation at home. Which is why I took her in for more support.

OP posts:
Abep · 11/07/2023 00:55

When I broke bones in my foot several years ago, I was told to wear trainers or similar as a boot wouldnt help to heal it and painkillers and to elevate while resting, doesn't sound like they fobbed you off, they gave you fairly standard advise, you decided you knew better and they gave you what you wanted, a boot.

WetBandits · 11/07/2023 00:55

Threemangoes · 11/07/2023 00:50

She wasn’t ‘fobbed off’, she was advised correctly. You can and should walk on it as pain allows. A boot is sometimes provided for comfort only, it adds nothing to the healing process, especially not ten days on when the bones have already started to heal. Boots can make things worse as they alter the length of the leg so she’ll probably have weak muscles and a sore hip soon enough thanks to mum 👏🏼

Where did you study medicine, out of interest? Perhaps you were taught differently. 🙂

pictoosh · 11/07/2023 00:57

Yep, you wanted a boot that she doesn't need so they gave you one.
Otherwise you and she were treated in the appropriate standard way.

Because she only went to school a few days and needed extra care on those days (teacher strikes). When at home and rested she didn't fuss at all.
Medical advice should be to provide and offer support for a broken bone.
She didn't have swelling to indicate a break. So we got on with elavation and ice packs hoping to heal within a few days.
Hope you are not feeling very clever now.

Fine to ask for a second opinion, not fine to just tell the Dr they are wrong and you are right.

I didn't study medicine but you need to improve your reading skills.
I needed support for school for her. For safety and comfort because she has been in pain and making it worse because she can't "rest" in school.

I never said that. I simply asked for more support for her for school. To which he said she can have it but the bone doctor might advise otherwise. So I'm waiting to hear from the bone doctor. She immediately felt comfort walking on it I saw her face light up.
It's only for a few hours in school not surgically attached to her leg🙄

I can read just fine, my understanding is that you left your child in pain for ten days and now you want to blame somebody else because you know you should have taken her sooner?

I also know full well you didn’t study medicine, and that you were given a boot not because it will help but to get rid of you because you were undoubtedly being as rude and obnoxious to the staff as you are to everyone else here who is suggesting that you might have caused this problem and that the staff were correct in their original advice.

Please do follow every word of the medical professionals without ever questioning them or following your gut instincts. The news papers are full of medical staff failing patients even causing unnecessary deaths.

Yes that's exactly what happens I'm glad you saw it and now you can sleep well because you were there. Sweet dreams

Perhaps you could speak to school, I know in my daughters school sometimes they can leave lessons early to go to the next lesson etc without being out at busy times hopefully minimising the risks/safety.
That might be easier than her having to wear a boot in this hot weather x

I have spoken with them. They will help with getting her a lift pass so she avoids stairs. Let's see how it goes tomorrow.
Thank you
