Short sudden bad headaches 11 year old boy

My son has suffered very short, very bad headaches every few months for the last few years.
We went to the GP who checked him over and doesn't feel there are any issues but told me to keep a diary.
It has now happened 6 times since Oct 22 and the one this morning was the worst. He screams out in pain, puts his fingers in his ears (he thins this helps) but then is screaming until it has gone. Usually around 10-15 seconds) This one has left him tired needing a nap.
Our diary shows no pattern at all. We are recording good, excercise, hydration, stress.
Over the last 6 months he has also had unexplained periods of sickness too.
Any ideas?
I'm going to call the GP today again as this last one has really worried me.
He explains the pain starts at the back and then come round to the right hand side and gets worse and worse.

Hi @Bob122 they sound like ice pick headaches - random, short burst stabbing head pains. If I were you, I would go back to your GP and ask for a paediatrician referral, just to rule out anything underlying.
