Calpol doses

My 4 year old needs 10ml of the infant calpol but won't take it because it's two syringes worth and too much for them right now (they've been sick a few times today).

I have the 6+ calpol (red bottle) as well. Can i give them a small bit of that instead so it's less liquid for them to swallow?

If so, can anyone help me work out the correct dosage for a 4 year old? I've thrown away the leaflets so I can't see how much paracetamol is in 1ml for either of them to calculate it.

I find it really hard to calculate doses when they’re for older children and you’re trying to titrate them down so no help here I’m Afraid ☹️
however, my DD has always hated calpol so wherever possible I give her nurofen which is a much smaller dose than 10 mls and she is tolerates dose/taste much better. Is this an option for you? Even in between calpol doses?

No nurofen in the house but I'll send someone out for some if she still refuses calpol. Thanks!

NHS has the amounts and relative dosages here https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/paracetamol-for-children/how-and-when-to-give-paracetamol-for-children/#:~:text=Syrup%20doses%20for%20children,dose%20contains%20250mg%20of%20paracetamol.
My take is that if she'd be having 10ml of infant that would be 240mg paracetamol and 5ml of 6+ is 250mg so just under the 5ml?

geraniumsrojo · 12/06/2023 20:23

4.8 ml

geraniumsrojo · 12/06/2023 20:29

Infant syrup has 120mg paracetamol per 5ml.

A 4 year old takes 10 ml of infant syrup.

That is 240mg.

6+ syrup has 250mg paracetamol per 5ml.

240mg is 96% of 250mg.

96% of 5ml is 4.8ml.

So a 4 year old needs 4.8ml dose of 6+ syrup.

As PP says, you'd only need 2.5ml of ibuprofen at that age. So might be worth trying. x

There’s a New Zealand site that works it out for you. I’ll try and link it.

Shopper727 · 12/06/2023 20:35

The 6+ calpol has 50mg/ml so 5ml is 250mg
as @geraniumsrojo the equivalent dose for your 4 year old is 4.8ml of medicine - I gave mine the 6+ also.

Ibuprofen is 200mg/5ml and only comes in that strength for all children.

Hope your lo is feeling better soon
