Son fell off bike and went face first in to a cattle grid face swollen advice needed

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice. Earlier this evening I took my 11 year son out for a bike ride. We live in the country side with alot of farms and so there are alot of cattle grids

Normally he is fine riding over cattle grids when riding down the road. But today I don't know what happened but his wheel got stuck in a cattle grid, he went over handle bars and went face first in to the cattle grid.
He was wearing a helmet but his face still managed to hit cattle grid.

I ran over to him and helped him up. He was rather shaken and upset and I noticed quiet a bit of blood in his mouth.

We went straight home. The bleeding stopped quiet quick. But his face started to swell up a bit on one side top of jaw just below nose

I tried to look in his mouth to see if I could see where blood had come from.
I can't see any wobbly or broken teeth. But it's hard to see properly because of the swelling.

The only thing I did notice was he has a tooth that has grown above on top of another tooth ( which I did taken him to dentist a while ago but they are awful and didn't care and would not do anything) and it looks like that tooth might have gone in to gum and cut gum.

He is in some pain, I've just given him some pain medication and he is holding a ice pack on his face.

Like said he isn't bleeding any more. Just in some pain, face swelling, and some bruising.

Do you think it's ok to just keep a eye on him or should I take him to see someone tonight.
Would he need to see a Dr or dentist.

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks in advance

I’d pop him up to minor injuries and get them to check him over , sounds really painful .

DontMakeMeShushYou · 20/05/2023 21:19

I'd go to minor injuries or A&E. They'll advise if you need to see a dentist.

cryinglaughing · 20/05/2023 21:20

Our closest hospital is urgent care, I’d be taking him there.

HotPenguin · 20/05/2023 21:23

You need to look out for concussion, you can get it from a bang to the face, not just a bang to the head.

The hospital won't do much for damaged teeth ime, they will tell you to visit your usual dentist, but they may want to check out any fractures etc.

My sister broke her nose years ago by falling off her bike onto a cattle grid - she still has the lump!

MollyBunny154 · 20/05/2023 21:26

Thanks I think ill pop up to urgent care with him, they are the closest to me. Would rather be safe just incase he has broken his upper jaw or something.

Good decision. I hope he’s ok.

MoreCheesecakeNow · 20/05/2023 21:29

Everyone has already suggested what I would but poor little mite. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Lougle · 20/05/2023 21:35

I'd definitely get him checked out. Is his neck sore?

MollyBunny154 · 20/05/2023 21:42

No his neck isn't sore he is just in a lot of pain on his face.

Definitely take him to see a doctor if he has a head/face trauma. Poor lad.

cestlavielife · 20/05/2023 21:47

He s had an accident.
Go to a and e

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/05/2023 22:05

I would go and get him checked as I speak from experience. I had a bike accident (wearing a helmet) last year. What looked like superficial injuries ended up being a broken nose, shifted teeth and I had a lot of stitches. I also broke several fingers trying to break my fall and concussion. When I got up I was "ok" but I was taken to hospital and I'm glad I was as I had far worse injuries than I realised. Regardless it's a blow to the head so you really should get him checked over.

MollyBunny154 · 20/05/2023 22:09

I'm on my way to get him checked out now thanks everyone

Floralnomad · 20/05/2023 22:32

Hope you don’t have too long a wait to be seen

Oblomov23 · 21/05/2023 04:27

Also after this, talk to practice manager at dentist, ask for Your concern is logged. Ask for 2nd opinion on what they are going to do re tooth. Be firm.

mrsbitaly · 21/05/2023 07:21

I hope your son is OK OP poor thing

wildfirewonder · 21/05/2023 07:29

Modda · 21/05/2023 07:30

How it he today?

Floralnomad · 21/05/2023 10:02

How is he today @MollyBunny154

cryinglaughing · 21/05/2023 12:50

Hope he is okay today, though I suspect he will be very sore for a while yet.
