Hi All

My add (4) is having to take Flucloxacillin. It is in liquid form and tastes horrible!
is there anything i can mix it with to try and make it taste a bit better? There's tears from her with each dose 🙁

i'm seeing mixed messages when referring to Google.

thank you 🙏

You can mix it with whatever your DD likes the taste of, as long as she takes it straight after mixing (i.e. don’t flavour the whole bottle). Apparently directing it into the cheek rather than on the tongue helps avoid the worst of the taste, chased down with something delicious. Also, this is definitely the time for bribery.

Below is official NHS advice for taste masking - this was for opened capsules when the shortage was at its worst, but still applies.

You can't IME. We used to bribe with chocolate / sweets after each dose and squirt it in quickly to the cheek.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 07/04/2023 08:02

Yes, I should have said - you can mix it with anything, but whether it will make any difference to your DD is another issue. It is truly the most disgusting thing. Hope she’s feeling better soon.

I could not get it into my 9 yr old at all. He’s so good but every time it went in he retched it out as reflex.

We went back to the doctor and they gave us a different antibiotic- perhaps amoxicillin? I’m sure Fluclox is amazing medically (and cheap) but if the child can’t get it in, it’s useless.

Some doctors will not prescribe Fluclox to children for this reason.

If you can’t get a different antibiotic I dunno maybe try mixing with golden syrup?

Jo think on a spoon is easier and quicker than a syringe. Quick gulp then some chocolate or a sweet straight after.

thank you everyone. mixed it with a teeny bit of neat squash! worked a treat!

Hi, I know this was a while back but can I ask how did you manage to mix it with neat squash? Did you syringe the neat squash in after syringing 5ml liquid into the syringe if that makes sense? My lb 3 has just been put on this and I know it’s going to be a struggle from his response after the first lot!
