Spots around mouth?

theworldisgrey · 03/04/2023 20:49

Does anyone know what this may be please? (We have a doctors appointment in the morning)

My 5yo son started with spots around his mouth/nose area yesterday which has slowly gotten worse. He has been a bit off his food and also his tongue looks like it has a layer of white on the surface. No temperature but does seem a little under the weather.

Thanks in advance Smile

Looks like hand, foot and mouth.

There was a girl at rainbows last week with dots that look like this & the mum said it was impetigo. Could it be that? She had just had a mild cold.

I was thinking this too but I thought it ended up more crusty as the spots/blisters popped. Although he did have a cold/tonsillitis last week so may well be that. He can't seem to catch a break recently :(

Do they normally have a temperature with this?

He doesn't have anything on his hands or feet either. He's not had it before so not really clued up on it

Poor thing,it’s awful when it’s 1 thing after another is t it😕 a Dr or Nurse might see the photo & suggest something else.

Sorry I put dots, I meant spots.

your GP might do a video consult & leave a script.

I agree HF&M. They don't always have spots on those places - mouth & chin most common I think.

Thank you everyone 😊

Looks like it to me too. If you’ve not had it, be hot on hygiene and ask your OH for extra help if you can. My DD had just a couple of spots on her fingers. I was so covered in blisters on my feet I couldn’t walk, my hands were agony, but worst my throat was so full of blisters I could barely swallow, was delirious with fever and couldn’t eat for days. I was more unwell with adult HF&M than I have been with anything. Even my very self involved ex was worried and took time off work to look after DD.

Oh my, this sounds horrendous for you!
I haven't had it myself either 🙈
Thank you for the advice, will definitely be hot on hygiene as don't want anyone else catching it

Possibly impetigo could also be hand foot and mouth. My child had similar around her mouth before Christmas and was diagnosed as impetigo. A day later then had blisters on hand and feet, then diagnosed with hand foot and mouth. Prior to the spots around the mouth she had tonsillitis. And she ended with chicken pox a few days later. I called it our week of plague!

Snowjokes · 03/04/2023 21:41

Does look like hand, foot and mouth. We all avoided it when 2yr old got it, but a sibling had the same experience as ChattyCathy.

But having said that, it also looks very similar to the start of impetigo! Whatever doc thinks it is, if it doesn’t go away then keep bugging them as it does seem common for HFM, impetigo, chicken pox to be diagnosed incorrectly in the early stages.

spidereggs · 03/04/2023 21:53

Agree it looks like hand foot mouth.

Watch the bum.. we call it hand foot mouth bum locally as always seems to make them sore there. In fact mine had in face and bum but not hands and feet, then bum was infected and became impetigo

mishmased · 03/04/2023 22:04

@spidereggs a friend warned me to watch out for the bum and thank goodness she told me. Her bun started with bumps but thankfully we caught it in time. She is in nappies so was easy to see.

MissMaple82 · 03/04/2023 22:23

Unlikely to be impetigo as it appears to be singular spots. That's not typical of impetigo, it's also nothing to do with a cold. It's bacteria getting into cracked or broken skin.

theworldisgrey · 04/04/2023 07:41

Thank you everyone, we have the doctors today so will see what they say 😊

Yep, hand, foot and mouth. Dd was particularly poorly when she had it. I got it too and it was horrible.

theworldisgrey · 04/04/2023 19:34

The doctor has said it's impetigo. It's looking much more crusty today so we now have some cream to apply

Thanks everyone for your opinions 😊
