DS Pain When Weeing

My DS(11) started crying on Thursday night that he had really bad pain in the head of his penis when he went for a wee and for a few minutes afterwards. I kept him off school on Friday and DH dropped off a urine sample at our GPs. They did a dipstick test and said negative for UTI but would send it to the lab for cultures and so we are waiting for the results. In the meantime the pain went away over Saturday but has been back since yesterday afternoon!
DH has had a look at it and says everything looks normal, no swelling or redness so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the skin.
Just perplexed as to what it could be! Is it very likely that the dipstick test could be wrong? Can a UTI cause pain that goes away then comes back again later? Also he seems fine in himself, just the pain when he wees which he says is like a stinging sort of pain.
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or experienced similar? thanks!

Sounds like it could still be a UTI. Has he got a fever? Has he had any trauma to the area in the last week kicked or injured in anyway. What colour is his urine, is it dark, smelly, or cloudy?

Thanks for replying. The doctor called yesterday and said there's definitely no UTI so his guess is DS has been 'fiddling' and caused inflammation. He's prescribed some steroid cream to try and settle it down so we'll give that a go and see what happens!

Oh bless him, I hope the cream does the trick. Sounds like there could have been some trauma to the area then.

A UTI wouldn't effect his head. It would make the urethra burn. It could be his frenulum is to tight unless he is circumsized then he doesn't have one. Or it could be just growing pains
