Chicken pox scars

Hi, my daughter had chicken pox almost 4 weeks ago and they have left her with really bad deep red crater/pitted scars on her face, there's about 15 of them. I am beyond devastated, there's no way to hide them. It's beyond upsetting looking at what theyve done to her perfect baby skin. Has anyone got some positive experiences with crater outted sxars on young children? If so did any oils / creams work over time? ❤️

I'm going to follow this. DD has one very prominent one on her face which is still noticeable three years on. I'd be interested to know if there's anything that can be done to help it.

Time fades them.
I had a huge crater under my eye as a child.
DC also had really big craters that soon filled in and faded.

Most scars you need to keep out of sunlight when new to reduce scarring.

So I recommend now and the rest of this year to use sun cream regularly, and large floppy hat to allow time the next 6-13 months for them to heal without uv rays damage

Ds has scars for other reasons than chicken pox (he has autism and is a massive scab picker)

I put some bio oil on or vitamin e oil every night to limit the scars, can you try that?

Hi @Hannahamym

Can I ask how things are going a few months on? My DD had CP a month ago and has been left with four big craters on her forehead. Feeling really down about it.

Thanks

Hi @LilyPad150 we're 4 months in now and the redness has gone down so much but the scars inbeteeen her eyes remain and around her eyes but the ones on her forehead have started to fill in now. I really think in time (probably years) they'll all 'fill in' and fade. They look less noticeable once the redness goes which will take a while but it does get better. I still know they're there and it does upset me but not as much as it did. I honestly know how you feel. x

Thank you so much for your reply, it has really helped me. Glad to hear the redness has gone and fingers crossed they all start to fill in now.

Did you put any special creams on them? And what sort of size/depth did they start? My DS’s are around 1-2mm deep and about 4mm width.

Big thanks again x

Forgot to tag you in above message @Hannahamym

Hannahamym · 10/07/2023 22:12

@LilyPad150 I would say all different sizes some bigger some smaller but the depth was about 3mm some even deeper but they all ha ve improved, even the really nasty ones have gotten better. You name it I had it! I brought everything! I used the silicone gel religiously for 3 months morning and night but its a pain as it takes ages to dry, and I would always moisturise after it dried but if I'm honest the last month since its been so hot I stopped. I have been making sure she has sunblock on her face at all times and I still use moisturiser on her. The gel i used is dermatix ultra and moisturiser is avene cicalfate. They will honestly get better in time. How old is your lo? X

Hello, aware this is an old thread but please can I ask how your children’s scars are now? I’m in the same position with DD8, four weeks on from awful chickenpox. She also has similar looking marks on her forehead and I’m feeling just awful about it. Am using bio oil on them at the moment.

BonjourPetitPois · 27/01/2026 06:35

Hi @HannahamymSorry to resurrect a very old thread, just wondered if you would please be able to update on how your LO’s scars are now? In a similar situation, trying desperately to sort out my DD’s scars from CP over Christmas, which sound similar to what your DD experienced. Feeling just awful about it all!
