My son is 5 abd yesterday cane home from school with a fever of 38.5. The teacher said he'd been very shivery. Been alternating calpol and nurofen but last night had a temp of 40.8. Thankfully came down with medicine but shoukd I get him checked or wait and see? He's got a nasty cough but not massively snotty. He's had a cough for weeks. We all seem to keep getting bugs. I've got a cough myself. No rash or anything

I'm akways torn as the doctors usually just say ut will pass but not had a temp like this since he had covid a few years ago. ( I've done a covid test yesterday it was neg)

If his fever lasts more than 48 hours and if he seems listless, not eating much and fussy, get him checked out. Keep him hydrated and give him cuddles.

A fever itself isn’t dangerous - it’s helping kill off the bugs that are making him poorly. It’s the other affects that are the worry. So make sure he’s hydrated (ice lollies, sips of water/juice/lemonade) keep in a cool room with light layers (don’t sponge him down or put in a cold bath).

If he’s hard to wake, seems confused, has a rash, aversion to light, stiff neck, very cold hands or feet, doesn’t wee for a long time then that when you need medical help asap.

As long as he’s ok in himself apart from the fever keep up with pain relief if he needs it and keep him comfy. Just keep an eye. Hope he feels better soon!

Thanks to both of you! He's definitely not himself as he's quiet lol but his temp is under control with the calpol and he's eating and drinking. So hopefully will be his normal self soon.

Have called 111 as he was shivering and his skin went mottled. They've booked him an appointment tomorrow unless anything gets worse.

He's breathing quite fast Probably 150 bpm And his temp wasn't coming down. After 1hr 10mins it's finally gone down to 39.8.

So scary tho.

Keep an eye tonight. If you have any worries or he gets worse at all give 111 a call back.

Hope he’s ok and hope you’re ok too!
