Black stool

My 13 y/o son told us yesterday that he's had black stools for a week already, and he didn't say anything until yesterday. He has no other symptoms and no pain. I did the wrong thing and googled it so we panicked. We called his doctor and she said he needs to be checked immediately so we spent the afternoon in the lab (urine, stool and blood tests).
I know that black stools mean bleeding in the upper GI but it usually comes with other symptoms like pain or vomiting and all the questions the GP asked were answered with a "no" so she was quite confused as he has appetite, energy and functions normally. He didn't eat or drink anything that would change the color. Besides, it's been a week so it's something not related to food for sure.

We will get the results on Monday and I know I will have a horrible weekend thinking about the worst case scenarios because that's how I am...

Has anyone here experienced something similar?

I assume he isn’t taking iron supplements?

Assume you have seen his stool? Did he slow you?

Has he been eating blueberries by any chance?

LizzieB44 · 24/02/2023 11:06

I didn't see it and he hasn't eaten blueberries but I did see the last sample he gave in the lab and it was brown and has no traces of blood🙄... he is a very anxious kid and hypochondriac as well so the GP wants to have a friendly chat with him to see if his anxiety is something to worry about, and after the chat she will decide what to do.

Thank you for all the answers! I should have checked the color instead of believing him blindly. It's not the first time we take urgent measures and in the end it was nothing.
