Ear infection?

DD 6 has Been battling cold after cold for last few weeks, latest being a bad cough and runny nose and low grade temp for 3 days. temp now down and she’s eating and drinking and happy again.
however, at night she’s pulling and rubbing her left ear something awful - sticking her finger in it, complains she can hear whooshing or buzzing in it. is this an ear infection and if so will it just likely be viral or does it warrant a Gp trip for antibiotics?

my kids have had everything under the sun apart from ear infections so this is new territory for me!

should add she swims twice a week so could be water in ear from Sunday’s swim but as she’s swum twice a week for years i don’t know why that would be the cause now?

is it actually painful or just buzzing?

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is a common condition in which this tube is not working properly, often temporarily due to an upper respiratory tract infection like the common cold or an allergy such as hay fever.

I would definitely ring the doctors from these symptoms. It's possible it is an ear infection so it's worth checking

Ooh good question. Don’t think it’s very sore as she’s quick to complain if something hurts, it’s more like it’s irritating her as she’s jabbing her finger in and pulling it out really hard, but only at night time. Few times in last couple of days she’s complained of hearing a buzzing or whooshing sound that I can’t hear so I’m guessing there’s something going on in there

This sounds almost exactly like what she’s been describing as at one point she said she feels like she does when she’s been underwater or holding her breath too long

Thank you, I’ll call tomorrow. Just wasn’t sure if all ear infections are just mainly viral so no real point in asking for an appointment so huge thanks.
as I say we’ve had every other virus under the sun but possibly infected ears are new territory for me!

Ear calm is a spray available OTC and can be good to clear up minor ear infections

All pharmacies sell ear calm but it's behind the counter so you have to ask for it

wobblymum1 · 08/02/2023 23:21

Great thank you, she’s up just now coughing away so I’m guessing it’s just lots of catarrh all bothering her ears and chest ☹️☹️

Dont just put something in your childs ear
Check with the pharmacist at a minimum but ideally needs to see a doctor for them to have a proper look

wobblymum1 · 08/02/2023 23:30

Looks like a long night of her coughing so I think I’ll ring go in morning and see if someone can have a look in her ear and listen to her chest as it’s such a bad cough. She seemed much better today but I don’t want to miss any infection that needs treated. Thank you 💞
