Hydrocele in 3 Yr old

Yesterday my son had an appointment with a paediatric surgeon as he's had a swelling in his scrotum. He said its a hydrocele and won't need surgery as it should sort itself out by age 4 and shouldn't cause any problems.

At the moment the swelling has gone right down and only really appears after he's done a poo.

Does anyone have experience with this issue?
Can there be any issues?

Exactly the same here, except it was the GP. GP said that if there were any issues, or it had not resolved after a year, he would refer ds to paediatrics. The hydrocele resolved within the year, just as he said it would. There were no issues.

My Son has just had an operation to have his removed actually. Same place in his scrotum but his showed up at 4 months old. He was referred to the paediatrician who said if it hadn’t gone by 2 they’d remove it. He’s 3.5 and has only just had it removed because of the waiting list. Very straightforward minor surgery.

They explained it in that the tube the testes travel down before birth hadn’t properly closed so was leaking some ‘fluid’ of some sort that formed to the hydrocele. They like to remove them if they don’t disperse in to the body themselves as to avoid complications later in life and for my son, to close the tube off to prevent proper hernias forming in the future.

hope that helps ease your mind.
