Handhold please - croup

Dd (1 next week) woke up earlier, classic croup barking sounds. She was really struggling to breathe and very distressed so called an ambulance. They were great and took us to a+e. She had steroids and they kept an eye on her heart rate and sats for a little over an hour. The last time they came to do final check she was asleep and breathing was fine so said we could go home.

We've been home for about 45mins and she's asleep on me but her breathing sounds so raspy and I'm scared to go to sleep! Her breathing is even, it just sounds awful :( just after a handhold, or any experiences of croup etc.

I don’t have any experience @BelleSauvage9 but I hope your DD is feeling much better soon! It’s always so scary when they’re unwell 😔

Thank you @Username24680

It’s awful mine are always getting croup. I’m really hoping my eldest is growing out of it. I just stay awake even if the child is asleep. If you are still worried you can always ring the gp in the morning

Mine was very prone a year or two ago but we’ve only had 1 episode in the last 6 months. It’s really frightening but usually sounds a lot worse than it is. GPs can prescribe a bottle of dexamrthasone to keep at home if it’s reoccurring - really handy as it’s what the paramedics give them anyway, so might be worth asking. Hope you’re okay!

Thanks very much both. Her breathing calmed down and I slept for a couple of hours. Didn't want to but was so tired I couldn't keep myself awake! She seems absolutely fine this morning, coughing a little but breathing fine 👍 fingers crossed we don't have the breathing troubles again tonight, it's bloody scary! I remember my little sister having croup as a child but she just had the barking cough, I don't remember her ever really struggling to breathe.

It doesn’t tend to come back after the first bout in my experience, hope that’s the case for you xx

That's is a comfort to hear @Cuppasoupmonster thanks 😊 fingers crossed
