Worried about dd

solomonsfish85 · 01/02/2023 19:56

This has been going on since early December and I'm slowly going insane,
My dd8 had tonsillitis and had 5 days antibiotics back in early Dec
Second antibiotic for tonsillitis 5 days later for 7 days
Came back again after finishing for 2 days, swab taken results were positive for strep another 10 days of antibiotics
She finished these 2 days ago and was saying today her throat is a little sore again! No temp no other symptoms, in great form
I don't know what to do, obviously going to bring her back to doc but just wanted to ask if anyone else has gone through this with their kids?
I'm missing alot of work and she has missed a good few days of school, it seems never ending,
Anxiety is through the roof over all this 😪

You poor things ☹️It’s so stressful when it’s one after the other ☹️
can you get a look in her throat with your phone torch? If it’s “just” red it may well just be start of a cold (millions doing the rounds). If there’s white spots or a temp then it may be back for antibiotics which I know must feel awful but could lead to tonsils out at some point (I think threshold now is 12+ bacterial tonsillitis in 12 months).
wishing you luck, my little one has been Ill almost non stop since November and my anxiety is literally through the roof too. It’s awful. Sending hugs xx

She may well have a strep variety that is resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (which both of those antibiotics are) or the strep has gone inside the cells of her tonsils so the antibiotics cant reach it. The doctor could try her with a different antibiotic like clarithromycin or doxycycline … and they may get rid of it finally. Keep pushing for her, she needs to get it resolved as leaving it can lead to heart problems etc. If you want I can send you a link to a scientific paper that talks about this.

Other things, if anyone else in the house has a sore throat, they should get it treated as well otherwise they will just give it back to her once she finishes the antibiotics (you dont develop immunity to strep)

Make sure you are giving her a new tooth brush after she has been taking the antibiotics for 2-3 days and anything else she puts in her mouth needs to be washed with hot hot soapy water (use the hottest cycle in your washing machine and dishwasher). If she has lovies or chew toys, sippy cups of bottles, they all need sterilizing. Otherwise she will get better for a couple of days and then just reinfect herself from her toothbrush and the cycle will start again

Wow I did not know any of this, thank you 💞

Its so frustrating than doctors dont give advice to chance toothbrushes and sterilize chew toys (for little ones) its one of the easiest things you can do to prevent reoccurrence of throat infection

Wobblymum1 I totally get what it's like, its never ending! All I do every day is Google strep throat or tonsillitis since she first had it
I just want it to end, I'm worn out
I hope your little one is getting netter and fingers crossed this will be the end of it x

How kind 💞I keep helicoptering around her trying to stop taking her temperature 😢
sounds like really good advice from @SeaToSki about reinfection, in fact I’m currently ordering new toothbrushes from Amazon prime as I look on mumsnet as she’s had the same unwashed one since strep A and scarlet fever in December 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
really hope your little one clears it soon and you can relax again xx

solomonsfish85 · 01/02/2023 22:42

Thanks so much seatosky
I actually changed her toothbrush twice already, after all the googling Hmm maybe I'm not changing it at the right time, her sister was only recently on her 2nd antibiotic for tonsillitis, she didn't get swabbed but presume that's what it was
What happens if the strep is inside her tonsils?
I'm hoping that a new antibiotic will clear it I'm so scared and I feel ridiculous because there are worse things we could have it's just my stupid brain

😅 you remind me of me with the thermometer!
I have my eye on a few of her kid lipsticks at the moment that probably will need to go in the bin incase of reinfection

Thanks so much for your kind words x

some antibiotics only work on surface bacteria, some antibiotics can access the inside of human cells to kill bacteria there. You just have to get the correct antibiotic for the situation, and sometimes its a bit hit or miss as its difficult for the doctors to tell exactly what is going on. They can do a swab and then a sensitivity test to see which antibiotics will work on the particular variety of strep your DD has. I also think if her sister has had an infection too, it would be reasonable for all of you to go on a course of something strong to make sure you eradicate it from the family

This is exactly what I was thinking about the rest of us, I had tonsillitis just after dd the first time, dp had it aswel, it seemed to go back and forth with the girls,
I'm going to suggest this to the gp and see what she says,
Thanks so much for all the advice!
Should be a gp yourself Halo

So update incase anyone cares 🙂
Went back to gp today, she had a look, said the tonsils do look swollen but no gunk on them, no fever, im good spirits and to just wait and see,
She prescribed antibiotics aswel just in case over the weekend she gets worse,
also took another swab
So I don't know!
She said it was common enough to be hard to get rid of the strep,

I care 🥰been thinking about you today.
great news no gunk, and glad she took a swab so you know exactly what it is, sounds like you’ve done a wonderful mama bear job 💐
how is she feeling today? No fever and good spirits sounds good 😊half my kids school are off today with swollen red throat but “just” viral. It’s endless. X

Aww thanks so much! ☺️ she is great today, was dancing around the place like her usual self!
Just still over thinking maybe I should just give her the antibiotics incase it gets worse again 🙃 mind is in over drive how is your little one doing? I've heard of loads are out of school with something or other, it's horrible x

We just had strep and our doctor said 14 days of antibiotics (keflex) is a must as it’s notoriously hard to shake.
