Hi I was just looking for advice or if anyone has been through anything similar
My ds age 7 went to a routine eye appointment and got told he was being reffered to the ophthamology team at the hospital as one of his optic nerves looked different to the other the optician said it looked abit 'smudged'. I am now besides myself with worry as I've been doing the worst thing possible and googling and convinced myself it's something sinister.

The idea of wearing glasses is to detect any worsening of vision compared with usually. So may make it harder if they are very blind without them. Any spare pairs lying around? Even on an old prescription likely to be a bit closer than without.

Boymum234 · 28/02/2023 20:16

No spares he's short sighted in one eye. I can't believe the luck of it the day before the appointment he comes home from school with them broken I'm going to ring the local specsavers in the morning see if I can get a emergency fix.

I'd suspect it's optic nerve drusens - very common, just calcium deposits but opticians freak out when they see them and rightly err on the side of caution. They don't need treatment

CatOnTheChair · 28/02/2023 20:53

Take the broken glasses, even if specsavers can't do anything. The hospital looked at what the script was using a machine - so basically wanted to know how bad his sight was without doing a full test.

Think we had bulging near the nerve.

Hope tomorrow goes OK.

Boymum234 · 28/02/2023 21:35

I've heard about the drusens before but not sure if that gives a smudge sort of appearance or not. And yeah I'll take them anyway and thankyou his is a smudge apparently on what I've read from other people's experience I've not seen anyone else have mentioned a smudge.

No, most opticians do not ‘freak out’ when they see drusen. They’re pretty common. But also most opticians do not want to take any chances by assuming an unusual nerve to be drusen, so would refer to be on the safe side.

Boymum234 · 28/02/2023 21:59

He did say if he thought it was anything sinister or was very worried we would have been sent on the day. But suppose will no more tomorrow when seen the specialist

@Boymum234 I've just had the exact same scenario with DD7. Went for a routine eye exam last night and they noticed her optic nerve looked 'smudged', she said it would be a few weeks before we heard anything and just had a call from the hospital booking her in on Monday. I am so panicked. I just wondered what your outcome was? Sorry to resurrect this thread.

Boymum234 · 01/02/2024 12:38

We finally got seen after having to rearrange a few times, they did lots of tests like eye tests scans of the eye and back of the eye ect and see the consultant, everything was okay nothing sinister it’s just the way his eye looks apparently! I was so worried but he did say the opticians are very cautious these days and it’s better to be safe than sorry! They are very thorough with the test ect so don’t miss anything.
