Lactulose baby experiences

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any experience in giving their young baby lactulose prescribed from the doctor. I recently stopped giving my 1 month old his usual daily feeding of breast milk and started only giving formula, he hadn't had a bowel movement for 4 days afterwards and started to seem like he was in pain, he was straightening and bringing his legs up going red in the face appeared to be straining and crying (he's never really cried apart from been tired and hungry) we tried all natural things tummy massage bicycle legs, cooled boiled water etc and in the morning of day 4 of no poop I took the last of my frozen breastmilk I was saving for his 8 week vaccination and gave him that, I also phoned the doctor and he prescribed lactulose but within 5mins of giving it him he had a bowel movement (I knew it couldn't of worked that quick so thought he was fine but gave him the second dose as usual that night) In the morning he had 3 more I thought he was better and thought it best not to give anymore but now he's gone 3 days again with no poop and straining and crying again. I'm thinking the breastmilk could of got things going last time but was wondering if anyone eles has been prescribed this for their little one and their experience.
Many thanks in advance.

I don’t suppose he’s around 6 weeks old?

A health visitor said that at around 6 weeks, babies gain more control over their bowel movements and it can cause a delay between poos at the time. In our breastfed baby’s case it was 10 days. It was a normal (albeit enormous) poo when it finally happened.

There was no straining and crying, and no transition to formula, so I’m not sure if it’s the same. I would hassle the HV or doctor if I were you.

Yes he is around 6 weeks. I'll be going back the doctor in the morning because he's been up all night pooing furiously 🥺 everytime the doctor tells me to give it him he has a bowel movement hours after and I can't work out if its the lactulose or he's doing it on his own. The doctor said we should aim to have one bowel movement a day but I read sometimes they can go days without it and don't know to just wait it between days even though he's always straining 🤦🏼‍♀️🥺

How is he doing now? What did the doc say?
