Strep A - Antibiotic dosage

Hi there

My 9 year old has confirmed Strep A.

He has been prescribed Amoxicillin 250mg twice daily 3 spoonfuls so 750mg in one go.

Is this normal? I always believed it to be 3 times a day at 500mg and this is what the BNF suggests. I know that it works out the same quantity over a 24 hour period, I am just concerned it's too much in one go and a mistake has been made.

Many thanks

Was it issued via hospital pharmacy or local Gp? I would ring them up to ask if it was hospital. gained
If your GP issued it and doesn't open on a weekend ring the pharmacy where it was dispensed to check it is correct.

It was issued by 111 and the pharmacy that it was collected from is now closed.

Ooh okay. I wonder if it's worth ringing up 111 and seeing if they have the record of the prescription and dosage that they sent to the pharmacy?

brokenstone · 07/01/2023 18:26

Yes I think that is probably a good idea. Thank you

I hope your DC is better soon.

Thank you.
I've spoken to 111 who referred me to a pharmacy that is open until 10pm. So I am to call them and speak to a pharmacist and ask if it is the correct dosage. Unfortunately they are not answering the phone.
