Help - anyone else seen chicken pox this bad?

My son came out in chicken pox on Monday (5 days ago) and he has just got progressively worse.
I called 111 yesterday who sent an ambulance. We were in a&e in an isolated room for around 5 hours. He had a high heart rate and temp. After 5 hours they discharged him and said that his spots aren't infected so take him home and bring him back if after 7 days he hasn't improved.
I'm so stressed, worried.
Looking for reassurance- has anyone else's child had chicken pox like this and healed ok??
He is covered like this over his tummy too

My now 5 year DS's looked like this, although more on his trunk (chest and back) than face. He was about 18m when he had it. He has a few scars now but mainly the spots healed up absolutely fine. He had a lot of oat baths and calamine. Miserable though and very scary for you about the ambulance and hospital stay. Hope your DS starts feeling better very soon.

You should be ashamed. Just fuck off.

So sorry @indigo277, I shouldn’t be swearing at posters on your thread.

Your poor little chap. He has got a whopper of a case. However, don’t worry about scarring. All but one of my child’s many, many spots healed with no mark. And that was one he’d had a go at In bed. And now, six months on, you can hardly see that one. The skin is amazing. So don’t worry. I did the same as you, calamine, slimy oat baths and Piriton (though probably this just helped him sleep rather than reduced much itching) and after two weeks or so, the spots had faded. He will get better, he will heal, and it’s one of the many parenting experiences we get through. One upside is that they’re lucky to get it when they’re so small as they won’t remember feeling so duff. A small mercy but one nonetheless.

Orcubed · 07/01/2023 14:36

Two of mine were covered like that, it’s horrible. Oats in the bath, pox cling and antihistamines helped. One of them has scars, the other doesn’t.

Oh gosh poor him and you - such a horrible thing chicken pox. My DS had a horrendous case of it last year tho he was much older at 7 years old but I was so worried as he was covered - had them in his eyelids ... well basically everywhere. But he was ok and actually no scars from it. Oat baths, and the cooling gel were a god send for us. Hope he's soon better OP.

Chicken pox is usually mild, only lasts a couple of weeks and very few children die from it. The mortality rate is something like 0.001%. So it’s fairly accurate to say the main risk is scarring, and this is what I was told by the GP when I was considering vaccinating my kids. OP said she was worried about whether it would heal ok. I gave my opinion, which is that I think it might not heal ok and might result in scarring.

Are you a dermatologist who can look at a case of chickenpox and know scarring probability?!

If none are infected and not scratched then actually liklihood of scarring is dramatically reduced.
DS1 had chickenpox pretty bad not 1 scarred, DS2 got it at 3 weeks very mild 1 has scarred because it was on a nappy line and rubbed.
You cannot tell just looking especially given you have zero direct child experience of chickenpox if yours are vaccinated.

@indigo277 your poor little baby. I have no advice I just hope he is better soon. How worrying for you. The poor little pet.

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2023 14:39

Yes DS2 got them as a baby. Absolutely covered in spots.

Reported also. Unhelpful and nasty thing to say to a worried parent.
@indigo277 - I have seen a case of chicken pox like this (a friend's child). They made a full recovery but that won't stop you worrying about your little one. Poor little mite - sending love for a speedy recovery 🌺

CottonSock · 07/01/2023 14:52

Poor baby. Not that bad, but dd was pretty bad. I got my second child vaccinated privately.

CottonSock · 07/01/2023 14:57

Do be careful with the baths. My dd found the drying process too painful. The doctor told us not to bathe her for a week.

megletthesecond · 07/01/2023 15:02

Yes. DD had it that bad at 3 yrs. Had to go to emergency GP a couple of times. She was ok and hardly any scars now.
I used lots of chicken pox gel and ice cream to get her through. Hope your DS perks up very soon.

megletthesecond · 07/01/2023 15:04

I didn't do a single bath either as we have hard water that always irritated her skin.

alsonotmyname · 07/01/2023 15:06

My ds had them really badly too but several years on and he only has a couple of small scars
I haven't rtft but if it hasn't been mentioned ask your gp to prescribe piriton or similar for the itching

crazycatladyof6 · 07/01/2023 15:07

Poor little love. As a child my step brother was hospitalised several times with chickenpox

awakenme · 07/01/2023 15:08

So sorry. My daughter at 6 months had them badly including in mouth and throat. She fully recovered with a couple of small scars. PoxClin helped with the itching https://www.boots.com/poxclin-coolmousse-10076517?cmmmc=bmm-buk-google-ppccPLAsAs--HealthhPharmacy--UKKSmartShoppinggHealthPharmacyyGoogle&gbraid=0AAAAADrIajVRXAt5b5ISBg89HnNtujwop&gbraid=0AAAAADrIajVRXAt5b5ISBg89HnNtujwop&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqdKBt961AIVmOvtCh25yQ0OEAQYASABEgLQdfDDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Fleabigg · 07/01/2023 15:11

My nephew had a terrible dose of it and looked a lot like this. They all had a difficult week or so at home but he made a full recovery and doesn’t even have any scars now.

ThePoshUns · 07/01/2023 15:17

Poor baby.
My son had it like that at 8 weeks, in the Summer. It was so distressing trying to keep him comfortable and cool.
He has got quite a few scars but mainly his head and neck so not too bad.
I wish the UK did vaccinate against it.
I hope he's on the mend soon. X

Festivefails · 07/01/2023 15:18

I have seen a child hospitalised with severe CP -

Key things to keep monitoring is fluid intake, little & often - if this changes & they are not able to drink or take less then half normal intake would make contact with medics again or go back.
Also check urine output, keep an eye on it if changes to less or none go in -

Similarly temperature if it does not come down or if a change in ability to rouse/wake etc - go back in -

Final thing if you are worried and want them checked again just ring 111 parent instinct important when little ones are unwell.

Ice pops, fluids, rest & cuddles, anti-histamine and distraction - low threshold for returning.

Eatentoomanyroses · 07/01/2023 15:20

@Velda my dd was every bit as bad as the picture and has only two very small, shallow scars which probably nobody would notice. I agree with vaccinating but not everyone is in the know about vaccination in the UK as it’s not the usual thing. When I realised there was a vaccination I felt very guilty. However I don’t know anyone in real life who’s had their child done for this. It is largely seen as a harmless childhood illness . There’s no need to make the parent feel bad. It’s crap enough when your child is so poorly.

I had this with my son it's very hard, poxclin helped lots

MargaretThursday · 07/01/2023 17:02

dd2 was 5 months when she had it (caught from dd1 who had it very mildly) and after a couple of days you couldn't count the spots as there were so many that they just joined up. What the doctors were worried about was that she had them in her mouth and going down the back of her throat.
However she recovered fine. She does have a few scars, just slight indentations on the skin which I see because I know where they are, but no one else does.

indigo277 · 07/01/2023 19:13

Does anyone have any photos of their children's pox so I can relax and see that they had it this bad and are ok Smile
I appreciate all of these messages so much but still just worrying!! Xx

DD was like this in the summer. She does still have a few scars but they're fading.

BobBobBobbing · 07/01/2023 19:56

Can't show the worst photos as they have his face on, but this was at the beginning and he had triple the number of spots by the end. When I took him into OOH the GP said it was the worst case she'd even seen.

If you get worried, check back in with the doctor. They will be best placed to reassure you or take action if needed.
