Help - anyone else seen chicken pox this bad?

indigo277 · 07/01/2023 11:43

My son came out in chicken pox on Monday (5 days ago) and he has just got progressively worse.
I called 111 yesterday who sent an ambulance. We were in a&e in an isolated room for around 5 hours. He had a high heart rate and temp. After 5 hours they discharged him and said that his spots aren't infected so take him home and bring him back if after 7 days he hasn't improved.
I'm so stressed, worried.
Looking for reassurance- has anyone else's child had chicken pox like this and healed ok??
He is covered like this over his tummy too

Say not see!!

Grandson like this, he was screaming 2.5 years old. He had to have antibiotics too, can't recall why but the hospital gave them to him. He had holes for a time

Tannedandfake · 07/01/2023 12:49

Oh, poor boy. My daughter was absolutely covered too. Virasoothe cooling gel worked well

Cismyfatarse · 07/01/2023 12:51

Bicarbonate of soda in the bath. I caught it from DS (my Mum told me I had had it. Turned out she mixed me up with my sisters). Was 30 years old and spent hours in a bicarbonate bath which made a huge difference to me. Mine was as bad, if not worse.

finished31 · 07/01/2023 12:52

My DS was 5 months old and he had it very similar.

He also got shingles around his torso just before he was 5.

We would put calamine lotion on, dry it with a hair dryer and add more. Poor DD ended up with antibiotics due to secondary infection from CP.

lordloveadog · 07/01/2023 12:52

Poor little love!! Hope better soon.

For anyone reading whose child hasn't had it yet - you can get them vaccinated. Had mine jabbed after a friend's child had it very badly. It's not part of the standard immunization program in the UK so you have to pay here. But worth it.

Oh love him. Chicken pox hit our household in October and we couldn't get poxclin at all locally. I found that virasooth stung (I had shingles) and DS said the same so we used calamine too. The pharmacist recommended calamine cream rather than lotion though and it was much better. We gave calpol and also piriton which really helped - I don't know the age limit for that though. Hope he's feeling better soon.

Catnipcapers · 07/01/2023 12:57

@Velda how is that a helpful thing to say to a worried mother?

Lol- what a lovely comment to say to a worried mother. If you have nothing nice to say please go away because this isn't the place for nasty comments.
The fact you're more worried about your child having a scar than them being seriously ill is concerning. Think you may need to rethink your priorities

@Velda what a stupid insensitive thing to say. The vaccine isn't protocol in the UK and OPs son clearly has an extreme case.

Sending Flowers OP - sounds like you are doing everything you can x

Ignoring the twat in the room...

Poor baby, looks so uncomfortable. DD has it very badly at about 12m. I kept her in a baby grow so she couldn't see the spots, as as soon as she did, she scratched them. She was only left with one scar on her eyelid and one on her back and that was it and she was covered. I hope it clears quickly.

NameOchangeO1 · 07/01/2023 13:04

Yes, my youngest had it at 12 weeks old and was absolutely covered. She had some infected sports too, but we had antibacterial cream for those.
I sat her in a bath with oats for as much time as I could and in between had her nappy free on incontinence pads during the day.

*from 12 months old, which I doubt this child is.

Can't vaccinate until 12 months old.
Also has a question mark over effectiveness in later life potentially leading to worse infections then.
It's not straight forward so take your judgement elsewhere.

tocahairchop · 07/01/2023 13:05

What a shame, poor thing, he must've been so uncomfortable. It does look like the spots are scabbing now though so he'll hopefully be over it v soon. My dd had it quite bad in the Summer and although she's been left with some marks, they aren't scars as such and have faded a lot over time. Hope he's much better soon

Inmyownlittlecorner · 07/01/2023 13:08

DD2 had them really badly when she was 3. We were in hospital because they kept cropping past day 5 & were everywhere, under her nails, her eyelids & inside her bottom & mouth. The Dr got a colleague to come to see her because you could watch them as they popped up. She had anti virals & also ended up with pneumonia. It was miserable but she has no real visible scars & has absolutely no memory of it!

Inmyownlittlecorner · 07/01/2023 13:08

Sorry, posted too soon. Wishing your little one well asap.

My DD had similar, except there was no skin between the spots, she was absolutely covered. She was 4 months old, so a non-sitting baby.

It was a horrible few days, but she recovered completely (and is now a lovely 20 year old with no scars [well, she claims she has one on her bottom....])

Howmanysleepsnow · 07/01/2023 13:20

DD did at 6 months old. I put germolene on them to stop the itch and infection. She’s 15 now and has zero scars.

Iamacatslave · 07/01/2023 13:25

My 6 year old daughter was similar to your son. The spots were on the soles of her feet. We ended up going to our GP, and she was prescribed antibiotics for 5 days. Oat baths helped her the best.

TrevorOptions · 07/01/2023 13:26

oat baths ! Poor mite.
